This role is an important component of patient experience, and the individual is expected to collaborate with clinical counterparts to provide a safe environment that promotes the best possible outcomes.Performs venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.Demonstrates expertise in patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, accessioning, and processing.Exhibit strong problem solving skills.Understands the criteria for specimen acceptability and rejection.Functions effectively in a team environment.Works under the leadership of Phlebotomist III, Preanalytical Specialist, Team Lead, Supervisor, or other Laboratory Leader and escalates issues accordingly.Possess critical thinking skills to adjust to changing work conditions.Carries out responsibilities in an independent and accountable manner in all assigned care areas.Function as an autonomous end user of relevant Geisinger business applications and tools.Performs collection of specimens in the Acute, Post-acute, Clinic and Field Service areas as needed.Mentors students and new employees.Expected to conduct themselves in alignment with Geisinger core values and competencies.Inventory management as required and directed by site or regional lead.Requires initial and annual competency via Learning Management System which includes an exam and direct observation checklist.Fosters a collaborative approach to delivering patient care, with effective communication and interpersonal skills, demonstration of individual and team accountability, and practice of sound judgement and decision making.Assists with continuous improvement objectives including root cause analyses and other investigative processes.Work is typically performed in a clinical environment. At Geisinger, our phlebotomists are the friendly faces that collect samples to be analyzed by our state-of-the-art labs. Supporting a varied patient population, you'll be responsible for venipunctures/skin punctures on patients in our inpatient setting.There are many other tasks our phlebotomists complete, such as troubleshooting physician orders, processing specimens for testing, as well as aiding our patients.We have many different skill levels in our labs, from new to experienced phlebotomists, and all skill levels are well utilized. Geisinger employs phlebotomists in roles I, II, and III. We also have numerous staff members who pursue their ASCP certification and become trainers for our department!Phlebotomist I, II and III qualifications will be considered at appropriate compensation. Salary commensurate with experience.Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA) or similar will be considered!Military experience will be considered.
