Restoration Finance and Analysis Intern, Global Restoration Initiative

About the Program WRI’s Global Restoration Initiative informs, enables, and invests in people that restore degraded land. The flagship investment program, TerraFund, finances, trains, and monitors over 200 growing organizations across Africa, Latin America, and South Asia. Restore Local, a portfolio of more than $60 million in projects in priority landscapes in Africa, Brazil, and India, is built through the TerraMatch platform and supports grant‑funded projects, debt and equity investments, and first‑loss investment tranches in blended funds. WRI is developing finance structures and partnerships to crowd more public and private capital into restoration that delivers proven outcomes for people, nature, and climate. Job Details This is a hybrid internship requiring a resident of DC, Maryland, or Virginia. Interns must work at the Washington DC office at least 8 days per month. Existing work authorization is required; WRI does not sponsor visas. Internship Learning Outcomes Learn about restoration finance, projects, and outcomes through data analysis, desktop research, literature reviews, and participation in programmatic activities. Support the development of robust research methodologies, propose data‑analysis frameworks, and organize research materials using WRI tools. Contribute to communication products—including blog posts, presentations, and impact stories—to showcase restoration champions. Review funding and capacity‑building applications and aid in managing the application cycle. Manipulate and clean data from restoration champions, update team Airtable resources, respond to data inquiries, and create guidance materials for the Unified Database. Gain Experience In Land Restoration—familiarize with projects and businesses that restore land. Building Partnerships—attend calls with programmatic partners and contribute to cross‑team activities. Data Analysis—clean data for the unified database and answer research questions. Product Support and Development—provide user support via Zendesk, assist with biweekly releases, and participate in user studies to shape TerraMatch. Restoration Finance—contribute to direct investments and research new financing mechanisms. What You Will Need Undergraduate students or recent graduates with interest in business, economic development, data science, environmental sciences, social sciences, or related fields. Experience analyzing quantitative and qualitative data and communicating insights from that analysis. Ability to learn on the job, work independently and as part of a team. Strong organization skills and ability to prioritize in a fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented environment. Understanding of ecosystem restoration, land use, forestry, conservation, or agriculture—academic or professional experience is a plus. Passion for land restoration for people, nature, and climate; diverse backgrounds valued. Verbal and written proficiency in English; working proficiency in French or Portuguese desirable but not required. Existing U.S. work authorization; WRI does not sponsor visas. Compensation $20/hour for undergraduates, $22/hour for graduates, and $24/hour for Ph.D. students. Length of Contract Full‑time, 3‑month internship with a flexible start and end date.
