Certified Medical Assistant Urgent Care

Job Summary:

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provides comprehensive clinical and administrative support in an ambulatory care clinic, ensuring efficient patient flow and high-quality care. This role involves patient rooming, specimen collection, immunizations, basic clinical procedures, and assisting providers within the scope of practice. The CMA leads Clinical Assistant I and II staff, makes independent decisions, and collaborates closely with the healthcare team to maintain smooth clinic operations. Responsibilities:

• Accurately collect and document patient information in medical charts and maintain up-to-date medication and immunization records.
• Recognize and respond promptly to signs or symptoms requiring intervention.
• Transport patients within the facility as needed.
• Prepare and assist patients for exams, procedures, treatments, and minor surgeries.
• Perform specimen collection, Point of Care Testing (POCT), and follow protocols for specimen handling.
• Assist with radiology exams if competencies are met.
• Provide immunizations and injections as ordered by providers.
• Assist providers and clinic nurses as directed within licensed scope of practice.
• Monitor patient safety, ensuring vulnerable patients have appropriate observation or assistance.
• Set up and maintain clinical equipment and supplies.
• Participate in staff meetings, unit goal setting, and comply with departmental policies and scheduling guidelines.
• Provide cross-coverage to support peers and clinics to ensure efficient patient flow.
• Perform basic life support as certified.
• Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare team members and patients.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Current National Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Minimum of 1 year healthcare experience, preferably in urgent care.
• Knowledge of clinic procedures, medical terminology, and age-appropriate vital signs and behaviors.
• Proficiency with medical equipment such as blood pressure cuffs, pulse oximeters, EKG machines, cardiac monitors, and manual defibrillators.
• Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
• Ability to use electronic medical records (EMR) and medical databases accurately.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Nursing degree from an accredited institution may substitute certification and education requirements.
• Experience with multiple EMR systems and training abilities.
• Experience in urgent care settings within the last two years.

Special Considerations:

• Must be able to make independent decisions within scope of practice using good judgment.
• Role involves exposure to blood, body fluids, and potential spills requiring strict adherence to safety protocols.
• Employee responsible for compliance with safe work rules and prompt reporting of accidents or unsafe conditions.
• Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, lifting up to 25 lbs, and occasional patient lifting.

Scheduling:

• Work schedule will be determined by clinic needs; may include varied shifts to ensure effective patient flow.
• Participation in at least 50% of area staff meetings annually is required.
• Cross-coverage duties may require flexibility to assist peers and different clinic locations.
