Job Details Office: Office of the Attorney General – Consumer Protection Division Specialty: Investigator IV-V Location: Dallas, Texas Employee Status: Regular Schedule: State Job Code 1354/1355 Salary: $5,416.67 – $6,666.67 per month (Grade 20–22) Number of Openings: 1 Overtime Status: Non‑exempt General Description The Consumer Protection Division of the Office of the Attorney General of Texas protects consumers by investigating fraud, deceptive advertising, and filing civil lawsuits to enforce state and federal consumer protection laws. The Division has regional offices in Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, and San Antonio. This position will be based in Dallas and contributes to a highly collaborative work environment where team members manage their own caseloads. As an investigator, you will conduct high‑complexity investigations and provide legal support in deceptive trade practices and other civil matters. Work is performed under general supervision and involves limited initiative and independent judgment. You may testify in civil court proceedings and assist the Deputy Attorney General for Civil Litigation as necessary. Responsibilities Obtain, organize, and analyze information, data, and evidence from consumer complaints and investigations. Perform background investigations and evidence collection from individuals and businesses suspected of violating state and federal consumer protection laws. Gather, organize, analyze, and maintain evidence, including records from internet service providers and third parties, using various computer platforms. Assist with drafting Civil Investigative Demands and related correspondence. Identify violations of the Deceptive Trade Practices Act and other consumer protection statutes in consumer‑related cases. Coordinate, assemble, and prepare evidence, exhibits, affidavits, and other documents for legal proceedings; organize trial notebooks, prepare witnesses, and file pleadings with court. Interview consumers and conduct witness background investigations, including contacting and interviewing witnesses and preparing interview summaries. Participate in attorneys’ caseloads by scheduling, prioritizing, investigating, preparing chronologies, fact summaries, and filing; communicate with state and federal agencies, court personnel, and outside entities. Assist with document review using electronic document review platforms. Provide detailed assistance to less experienced investigators and office personnel. Prepare reports, synopses, abstracts, and summaries of ongoing work; respond to public information requests. Perform general administrative and clerical duties, including reviewing mail for attorneys, handling telephone calls, and maintaining filing systems. Schedule, attend, and assist attorneys for hearings, trials, agency meetings, appellate arguments, depositions, docket calls, administrative hearings, and committee meetings. Perform related work as assigned. Maintain relevant knowledge necessary for job functions. Attend work regularly and comply with the agreed‑upon work schedule. Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive information. Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including ethics and integrity requirements. Additional Investigator V Responsibilities Develop investigative techniques and/or policies and procedures for conducting investigations. Serve as a liaison with external entities. Qualifications Education: High school graduation or equivalent. Education: Bachelor’s degree in a field related to investigation or technology. Experience in criminal justice, computer science, investigation, or consumer protection may substitute for education on a year‑for‑year basis. Minimum two years of full‑time experience in investigative work or consumer protection. Knowledge of investigative principles, techniques, and procedures, and of court procedures, practices, and rules of evidence. Knowledge of computer systems, hardware, software, operating systems, and related technology. Skill in multitasking, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines. Effective oral and written communication skills, including communication to non‑technical audiences. Judgment and decision‑making skills. Ability to learn new computer systems and databases. Ability to apply investigative techniques to assigned cases. Strong analytical and data‑analysis skills. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to manage stressful situations. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for business travel. Availability for work beyond 40 hours as required and compliance with the FLSA. Physical ability to lift and relocate 25 lbs. Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5% of the time. Require in‑person work at the assigned OAG work location and collaboration with coworkers throughout the work week. Additional Investigator V Qualification One additional year of full‑time experience in investigative work or consumer protection. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of legal terminology and principles. Proficiency with Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, Word, and e‑discovery platforms (Relativity, Everlaw). Familiarity with internet research resources such as Accurint, Consumer Sentinel, PACER, Lexis, CFPB, and Texas Workforce Commission databases.
