College/Department Information The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 304 students per class. The MCG educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, with regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state, and two four-year campuses located in Athens (in partnership with the University of Georgia) and in Savannah (in partnership with Georgia Southern University). MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provide more than 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to approximately 575 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and America's children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Job Summary This position offers the opportunity for education and hands-on learning in the medical field, in the rapidly advancing field of orthopedic surgery. This research assistant will work with Dr. Stephen Parada, Vice Chair of Research and shoulder surgeon and the AU Orthopedic Surgery Residents. A typical week will consist of being in the clinic for 1-2 days and in the office on the other days with the opportunity to come to the operating room for observation and assistance with intra-operative video and imaging. Surgical cases may include a variety of orthopedic surgical cases, many complex and very unique in nature. In addition, the Research Assistant will help both in the clinic and in the operating room. This position is ideal for the college graduate with future aspirations of applying to Medical School. It is an ideal opportunity for those seeking a 'gap year' to add to their experience and resume before applying to medical school. This role will provide you with immeasurable experience as well as potential authorship on multiple publications. This position plays a critical part in data collection for research grants. This work may require monthly or quarterly report submission to the grant/research sponsor.
Responsibilities Responsibilities to include but are not limited to: Literature: Research scientific literature regarding current understanding of experimental paradigms; conduct experiments, analyze results and summarize findings; prepare findings for presentations at national and international meetings, publication and grants. Research Activities: Coordinate research activities and procedures of staff, graduate and summer students by continuous discussion amongst lab members; participate in project planning and development of research protocols; develop and evaluate new techniques and procedures. Research Techniques: Advise principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows, students and technicians in research techniques and procedures; assist trainees and other technicians with analysis of project data. Compliance: Ensure compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to use of biohazardous materials, chemicals, anesthetic drugs and experimental animals; oversee use of materials, equipment, etc. Other: Order supplies and equipment; Maintain and trouble shoot equipment; maintain chemical and equipment inventories; and, perform all related other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, social sciences, natural sciences, life, health care, or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in a research or clinical setting. OR Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, social sciences, natural sciences, life, health care, or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years of experience in a research or clinical area.
Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, chemistry or other science related scientific field preferred. Experience the clinical, operative, and academic aspects of medicine preferred. Creative, self-driven, reliable, and motivated to learn.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities KNOWLEDGE
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases. SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with strong prioritization and organizational skills. ABILITIES

Shift/Salary/Benefits Shift: Days; Monday-Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required). Pay Band: B5 Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
