Tax Controversy Counsel

Direct Counsel represents an AmLaw 100 firm seeking an experienced Tax Controversy Counsel to join its nationally recognized Tax practice. New York is strongly preferred.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned tax controversy attorney to independently manage sophisticated federal and state tax matters while working directly with clients, taxing authorities, and an experienced national team.

The Role

• Represent clients in federal and state tax controversies , audits, and examinations.
• Handle IRS and state administrative appeals, collections, penalty abatements, installment agreements, offers in compromise, and voluntary disclosures.
• Represent clients before the U.S. Tax Court and in other tax litigation matters, including U.S. District Court proceedings.
• Draft protests, responses to Information Document Requests (IDRs), pleadings, motions, and settlement submissions.
• Provide strategic advice on tax compliance and controversy matters.
• Manage matters independently while collaborating with clients and legal teams.
• Contribute to the growth of a sophisticated, nationally recognized Tax practice.

Qualifications

• 8–10+ years of tax controversy experience in a law firm, government, accounting, or similar environment.
• Strong experience with IRS and state tax audits, examinations, and administrative proceedings .
• Tax litigation experience preferred.
• Excellent legal research, writing, analytical, and advocacy skills.
• Strong client-service and communication abilities.
• Ability to independently manage complex matters and work collaboratively.
• J.D. and active bar admission required.
• LL.M. in Taxation preferred, but not required.

Compensation & Benefits

• $400,000–$550,000 annual salary , depending on experience
