Summary Streets Maintenance Technician I (Job #9926, Level W1) responsible for general repair and maintenance of streets, drainage systems, signs, and signals under the supervision of the Streets Supervisor. Overview of Position Perform general repair and maintenance of streets, drainage systems, signs, and signals. Prepare work areas, tools, and equipment, and may perform other related functions as assigned. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Participate in all phases of streets, gutter drainage, and alley repair and construction. Assist in preparing work areas and securing job sites by setting up cones, barricades, and other traffic control devices. Assist in preparing tools, materials, and equipment necessary for various job assignments. Perform preventative maintenance on equipment and tools by cleaning and servicing regularly. Make repairs in pavement, curb, gutter, and sidewalk using epoxy-based chemicals and products under supervision. Operate simple to moderately complex equipment such as concrete vibrator, jack hammer, concrete saw, pavement grinder, and motorized/non-motorized hand tools. Maintain operational records, schedules, and fill out work orders. Respond to emergency situations after hours and/or on weekends. Participate in establishing traffic control devices such as barricades and cones. Guide traffic flow at work sites. Assist with setup, teardown, and clean-up of special events and meetings throughout the City. Conduct safety inspections of vehicles and equipment, set up barricades, cones, and road signs, and wear protective gear as indicated for the work assignment. Assist other City employees during storms and national disasters. Comply with all written City policies and procedures. Adhere to the assigned work schedule as outlined in City and department attendance policies and procedures. Additional Responsibilities by Assignment Asphalt Assist with crack seal operations. Assist with all asphalt finishing hand tools. Assist with filling potholes with hot mix asphalt. Assist with pavement reconstruction and repairs. Concrete Assist with setting up forms and rebar. Assist crew members with small hand tools like shovels and concrete rakes. Drainage Assist with shooting elevations. Assist with setting up forms and rebar. Assist crew members with small hand tools. Carry small debris from areas such as creeks and lakes. Other Job Functions Perform other duties as assigned or directed. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by previous experience and/or training involving street/drainage maintenance or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience. Must possess a valid Texas Class "A" commercial driver's license or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of employment. Conditions of Employment Must pass a drug screen and background check. Must have Class C Texas Driver’s License. Must obtain the National Incident Management System (NIMS) certificate IS-100 and IS-700 within six months of employment. During storms or natural disasters, staff may be called in while on vacation, with staff divided into two 12-hour shifts. Physical Demands Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, as well as stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Includes the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20–50 pounds) and may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds). Some tasks require visual and odor perception and discrimination. Work Environment Limited exposure to environmental conditions. Tasks may involve strong odors, traffic hazards, extreme heat/cold, or extreme weather conditions.
