Gross Room Technician (Healthcare Professional) Job Summary: The Pathology Grossing Technician (GT) is an allied health professional who provides technical support in anatomic pathology under the direction of the gross room supervisor and surgical pathology faculty. The laboratory receives and processes specimens from operating rooms and clinics throughout the hospital and healthcare organization. The GT grosses simple anatomic pathology specimens and interacts with other allied health professionals, such as nurses and support staff, to ensure adequate and appropriate processing of patient specimens. The GT must have a broad understanding of the day‑to‑day operations of the gross room and is critical in maintaining organization and efficiency. Key Responsibilities Primary Responsibilities – 85%: Proper accessioning of surgical pathology cases Specimen triage Staining slides during intraoperative consultation Distributing appropriate specimen containers, requisitions and tissue cassettes Printing additional tissue cassettes Organizing tissue cassettes numerically Gross room maintenance Organization of work areas Stocking supplies Monitoring supply inventory Assisting various staff Filing paperwork Answering telephones and faxing Grosses simple, non‑complex surgical pathology specimens including core biopsies, small biopsies, bone marrow, skin biopsy, and excisions. Supports pathologists, residents, pathologists' assistants, lab assistants and student interns when in the gross room. Uses cryostat to section intraoperative frozen sections and assists in staining frozen section slides. Triages specimens according to proper protocols and requirements for ancillary studies and/or biorepository tissue collection. Secondary Responsibilities – 15%: Attends renal biopsy procedures to assess biopsy adequacy Facilitates organization of cassettes and transport to tissue processors Documents time data points for various tracking mechanisms Photographs pertinent gross specimens Work Location Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship. Work visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Preferred Qualifications: Two years of experience in a clinical laboratory. Prior experience in an academic medicine environment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution. Outstanding customer service skills. Experience using laboratory equipment such as complex machinery and staining systems. Experience using MS Word and Excel. Preferred experience with developing reports, spreadsheets, and databases using these programs. Experience entering data into an electronic system. Experience with medical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology. Experience cleaning and maintaining laboratories and lab equipment. Experience working within an educational medical laboratory environment. The position may be eligible for overtime compensation depending on the level.
