About the Role

Robert Half is seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Part-Time Staff Accountant for a contract opportunity with a nonprofit organization in Westbrook, Connecticut. This position is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys supporting mission-driven organizations and is looking for a flexible, part-time role.

The Part-Time Staff Accountant will assist with day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, account reconciliations, and month-end activities while helping ensure the organization's financial records remain accurate and compliant.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and post journal entries to the general ledger
• Reconcile bank accounts and balance sheet accounts
• Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities
• Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation
• Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions as needed
• Assist with grant tracking and expense reporting
• Support budget preparation and financial reporting processes
• Prepare account analyses and reconcile discrepancies
• Generate financial reports using accounting software and Microsoft Excel
• Assist with audit preparation and other special accounting projects

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred
• 2+ years of accounting or bookkeeping experience
• Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and account reconciliations
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• High attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
• Strong verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous nonprofit accounting experience
• Familiarity with grant accounting and fund accounting principles
• Experience supporting audits and financial statement preparation
• Knowledge of nonprofit financial reporting requirements

Schedule

• Part-time schedule, approximately 20-25 hours per week
• Flexible weekday hours
• Contract assignment with potential for extension based on organizational needs
