To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers. Job Goal Responsible for all levels and all phases of his or her sport. Particular duties may be assigned to assistants, but the head coach is responsible for ensuring the activities are conducted correctly and on schedule. Essential Functions Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Supervise student athletes during all facets of participation (competition travel, meetings, practices, etc.) ensuring activities are conducted in an environment with minimal risk of injury and in keeping with the USD 500 Board of Education mission and policies. Maintain records to comply with district, athletic conference, state and KSHSAA requirements (pre‑participation physical exam, concussion form, insurance waiver, medical release, activity consent forms, tryout/participation agreement forms, emergency contact information, schedules, equipment inventory, game/student athlete statistics, accurate squad roster). Ensure candidates have completed required physicals and forms before practicing or being issued equipment; verify transfer student eligibility and activity ticket purchase. Implement practice schedules and other schedules following all school and district policies; submit schedules to administration for efficient program operation. Supervise practice sessions and maintain security of the locker room. Report all injuries to school officials following the injury reporting policy. Support athletic trainers assigned to practices/contests and heed their recommendations for student safety. Conform to established decisions and policy decisions in keeping with school and USD 500 policies. Organize and maintain inventory for uniform and equipment checkout; enforce care rules and ensure student accountability each season. Inform administration of equipment needs to maintain safety and performance. Maintain record of evaluation procedures used in the selection process; assess student athletes for feedback and team placement. Attend supporting activities for the sport (league meetings, coach meetings, parent orientations, recognition events, banquets). Develop team and individual practice regimes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention). Evaluate facility and playing field for hazards and recommend improvements to reduce injury risk. Oversee coaching personnel and student managers; assign duties and conduct written evaluations each season. Guide coaching personnel as appropriate; provide instruction, organization, and mentoring. Advise coaching personnel, parents, and athletes on sportsmanship expectations and KSHSAA Rule 52. Monitor student athletic academic eligibility and provide intervention to maintain eligibility. High School only – report team scores to media outlets and prepare public information releases. Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Athletic Director. Qualifications Certified teacher or qualified for Rule 10 certification through the Kansas State High School Activities Association. Successful completion of a criminal background check. Current certification in CPR and AED. Communication/Organization Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action that will meet the educational needs of students. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Language Skills Ability to read, analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, general curriculum, learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.
