Project Archaeologist

Job Description Overview This position is responsible for conducting and overseeing field research, data collection, inventory, analysis, report production, and curation, ensuring compliance with quality standards for technical work and in accordance with various agency requirements and guidelines, as well as general standards of scientific quality. The role also involves managing entry-level technical professionals. Responsibilities Direct technical work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. Develop expertise with regulatory compliance at federal, state, and local levels. Assist with documentation for agency and client coordination. Lead fieldwork, including teams of crew chiefs and/or archaeological technicians. Author large technical reports, research designs, treatment plans, and other technical documents, as appropriate and needed under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. Provide processing of records and materials collections. Provide preliminary identifications, analysis, and assessments of pre-contact and post-contact materials/features/structures to the Principal Investigator. Develop expertise in subfields of cultural resources management, such as artifact analysis, GIS, geo-archaeology, deliverable preparation, or similarly applicable subfield. Actively participate in professional organizations and development. Mentor and train more junior staff. Perform physical tasks such as digging, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lbs. such as a bucket filled with rocks or soil; boxes of stone artifacts. Walk and stand for prolonged time periods; dig with a variety of hand tools, bend, kneel, and stand. Work in the field under various terrain and weather conditions as needed. Be self‑motivated and able to work independently. Work within the office hours of 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime, and be flexible for irregular hours due to client needs. Be available for out‑of‑town or overnight travel to Pape‑Dawson offices or project locations. Have a valid driver’s license. Qualifications Bachelor of Arts/Science degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field. Minimum of four years of experience in archaeological investigations, such as PhaseI surveys, PhaseII testing, or PhaseIII data recoveries, artifact analysis, and report writing on projects in Texas. Candidate must have two years of supervisory experience in laboratory work, with preferred experience in historical artifact analysis. Working knowledge of Section106 of the NHPA, the Antiquities Code of Texas, and NEPA. Working knowledge of curation standards for the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory and the Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio preferred. Demonstrate competency in subfields of cultural resources management, such as artifact analysis, bioarchaeology, GIS, geo‑archaeology, deliverable preparation, or similarly applicable subfield. Proven ability to direct and mentor field and lab technicians. Exceptional organizational and record‑keeping, critical‑thinking, and time‑management skills. Ability to successfully delegate tasks and manage multiple collections concurrently. Experience writing technical reports from start to finish. Experience working on testing and data recovery projects preferred. Experience conducting archival research preferred. Experience with digital data collection platforms and Global Positioning Systems. Working knowledge of Excel and managing large databases. GIS experience preferred. Physical ability to walk, stand, dig, bend, kneel, lift up to 50 lbs., and work under various terrain and weather conditions.
