Communications Specialist

The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBC) is seeking a talented and versatile Communications Specialist/Staff Writer to join its Communications Team. This position will serve as a primary writer for The Carpenter magazine, producing compelling stories that highlight the work, achievements, training, advocacy, and impact of UBC members across North America. In addition to magazine writing and editorial responsibilities, the Communications Specialist will contribute to a wide range of communications initiatives, including digital content, social media, presentations, and other strategic projects that support the UBC's mission. Key Responsibilities Magazine and Editorial Content Research, write, and edit feature stories, profiles, news articles, and other content for Carpenter magazine. Conduct interviews with members, local union leaders, contractors, instructors, and industry partners. Identify and develop story ideas that showcase the accomplishments, training, safety initiatives, organizing efforts, and community impact of UBC members. Collaborate with designers, photographers, and communications staff to produce engaging magazine content. Ensure all written materials meet high standards for accuracy, clarity, and consistency. Communications and Digital Content Create written content for websites and other organizational communications. Assist in developing content for social media platforms, including copywriting, campaign support, and storytelling. Help maintain a consistent voice and messaging across UBC communications channels. Presentations and Visual Communications Assist in creating PowerPoint presentations and other visual communications materials for conferences, leadership meetings, training programs, and public events. Work with department leaders to develop compelling narratives and supporting visuals for presentations. Serve as an active member of the Communications Department and contribute to strategic communications planning. Coordinate with UBC departments, regional councils, local unions, and external partners to gather information and develop content. Support special projects and communications initiatives as assigned. Qualifications Required Excellent writing, editing, and interviewing skills. Ability to translate complex topics into engaging content for a broad audience. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines. Experience conducting interviews and developing feature-length stories. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and PowerPoint. Preferred Experience writing for magazines, newspapers, labor organizations, trade associations, or nonprofit organizations. Knowledge of the labor movement, skilled trades, or public policy. Experience creating content for social media platforms. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, content management systems, or digital publishing tools. Photography, video, or multimedia storytelling experience.
