SHAWNEE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Job Title: Transportation Supervisor
Reports To: Director of Transportation and Distribution
Site: Transportation Building

Qualifications:
Credentials: Valid Oklahoma Driver's License and acceptable driving record. (Will be required to obtain a minimum of Class B CDL with air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements upon employment.)
Education: High school diploma or GED. Bachelor Degree preferred but not required.

Training or Experience Required: 3 year of related transportation experience.

Job Goal (Purpose of Position): Performs semi-skilled to skilled level duties under general supervision to perform dispatching and clerical support duties for the transportation department. In addition, must know how to complete the necessary paperwork, understand Transportation Software and perform necessary communication. An incumbent in this position will follow generally standardized operating policies and procedures. Due to the level of position, the incumbent is required to use discretion, ingenuity and independent judgment in resolving problems and administering the transportation program.

Knowledge, Special Skills and Abilities:

• Communication Skills (oral, written, or business): Basic communication skills to exchange information, give/receive instructions and respond to inquiries. Includes filling out forms.
• Data Recording/Record Keeping: Performs simple data recording/record keeping operations requiring logging, filing or posting single entry items either manually or by computer. Ability to learn computer routing software, spreadsheet programs and basic computer functionality.
• Mathematical Skills: Performs routine computations requiring a knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
• Reading and Interpreting: Reads and interprets routine written or printed materials such as basic orders or instruction material. Understand routing needs according to plan book and make driver assignments to cover route needs.
• Tools and Equipment Usage: The most complex tools or equipment necessary to perform satisfactory include: operation of van, lift machines, and computer.

Essential Job Functions/Performance Responsibilities:

1. Assures that each scheduled route is appropriately covered by utilizing available relief or substitute drivers or monitors.
2. Maintains an accurate daily attendance roster of drivers and monitors.
3. Maintains cordial working relationships with assigned drivers, monitors and district staff.
4. Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of all facets of driver and driver monitors.
5. Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of roads and streets in the Shawnee school district.
6. Ensures drivers and monitors report their times accurately and any additional time is accurately reflected on the daily report.
7. May operate a two-way radio base, as required.
8. Communicates with employees to dispatch buses to needed locations for routine requests or emergency situations.
9. Maintain or assist in maintaining assigned files and records; receives and processes information according to established guidelines and procedures.
10. Operates standard office machines, as necessary.
11. Maintains regular attendance.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Contact with Others: An incumbent in this position has regular contact by telephone or in-person with transportation, district personnel and the public. Job requires interpreting and translating facts and information, explaining situations to persons and advising them of alternative courses of action. Must use tact and diplomacy, independent judgment, and problem solving.


Other Performance Measures: Successful performance of the job requires good customer service/people skills to service departmental needs. It requires following safety guidelines and policies to avoid injury and accident. It requires adhering to school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns, inclusive of the District Exposure Control Plan for Bloodborne Pathogens. Initiative and effective problem solving are critical to the success of the position.Must be able to cooperate with other staff members and have a positive attitude towards staff, students, and the public to enhance educational goals.

Supervision exercised: In the absence of the Transportation Director, an incumbent will supervise up to 35 employees including drivers, monitors, mechanics with the majority of the time spent in supervisory functions solving problems, advising subordinates, making decisions and interpreting policy. Incumbent will supervise up to 4 employees for distribution of warehoused items on a daily basis.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions: In a work day, the employee must stand/walk 6-7 hours per day. Employee's job requires frequent bending/stooping; squatting/crouching; crawling/kneeling; climbing; reaching above shoulder; and pushing/pulling.

Employee's job requires occasional carrying/lifting of up to 50 pounds. Job requires employee to use both feet for repetitive movements; use both hands for such repetitive actions requiring simple to firm grasping and/or fine manipulation.

Employee must possess hearing/speaking ability to communicate effectively by phone or radio.


Employee's job requires use of/close to machinery; working in the outdoors with temperature changes; driving motorized equipment; exposure to dust, fumes, gases and cold.


The incumbent must possess the ability to drive a bus when the need occurs. See bus driver job description for physical requirements associated with bus driving. Employee must have mental requirement to handle the stress of the job, apply reasoning and self-control under adverse conditions. Employee is subject to call out and overtime work.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 238 days annually. In compliance with Negotiated Contract and/or State Law; salary commiserate with experience.
