Position Maintenance Specialist III – Plant Maintenance, Texas Health and Human Services (HHSC), San Antonio State Hospital, San Antonio, TX. Functional Title: Maintenance Specialist III. Posting Number: 17444. Closing Date: 08/30/2026. Job Overview The Maintenance Specialist III performs complex, journey‑level work in building maintenance and construction trades. The role includes inspecting, adjusting, installing, maintaining and repairing buildings, utility systems, and stationary equipment. The position requires working under general supervision with moderate independent judgment. Key Responsibilities Conduct inspections, adjustments, maintenance and repair on building systems in accordance with recognized codes and standards (plumbing, HVAC, welding, carpentry, painting, electrical). Plan and estimate repairs, upgrades or renovations, determining materials, labor, costs and ordering parts and supplies. Operate motorized equipment (e.g., backhoes, forklifts) when necessary. Maintain accurate records of work orders, projects, and material requisitions. Provide training and guidance to other staff on repair and inspection procedures. Support disaster response and Continuity of Operations (COOP) activities when required. Essential Job Functions Attend work on a regular basis, including rotating schedule, extended shift or overtime per agency policy. Execute repairs and renovations to modernize buildings and adapt them for new uses. Test safety equipment and ensure systems meet safety standards. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of building mechanical systems, electrical distribution systems, boilers, painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical fixtures, welding, HVAC, sanitation, refrigeration. Recognition of industrial safety, fire and safety regulations. Proficiency with hand tools, power tools and test equipment. Preventative maintenance and inspection of buildings and systems. Interpret drawings, schematics and sketches. Independent and team work, problem solving, decision making, sound judgment, and effective oral and written communication. Qualifications Vocational training in at least one of: electrical, plumbing, masonry, mechanical equipment, locksmithing, painting, motor vehicle maintenance, grounds keeping, equipment maintenance, HVAC, carpentry, welding, or electronic cabling. OR minimum two (2) years of experience in construction, maintenance or equipment/vehicle repair work: Two years in at least one trade plus six months in at least two other trades from the list above. Licensure & Other Requirements Valid Texas driver license required; may obtain within 90 days of hire. Applicants with an out‑of‑state license must provide a certified driving record. Must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen and required registry checks.
