Position Title:  Phlebotomist (Clinical Laboratory Assistant)

Department:    Laboratory  

Reports To:       Laboratory Director 

FLSA Status:     Non-Exempt 

Job Summary:  

Under general supervision of the Lab Manager, the technician assumes the responsibility for performing phlebotomy appropriately and efficiently, under the philosophy, policies and procedures established by the hospital and the laboratory department. To assure that the highest degree of quality patient care is maintained at all times, the technician should be able to demonstrate skill and accuracy in obtaining specimens for all age groups serviced; maintain inter and intra departmental communications via telephone, fax, and reception desk; maintain effective and cooperative relationships with other personnel throughout the hospital; observe safety, infection control, and risk management policies and procedures; participate in continuing education programs and related professional activities; perform any duties and functions necessary to the efficient and quality operation of the department; controls supply usage; and demonstrates computer skills. Additionally, the lab assistant is to assist in the operation and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment and perform other duties as directed by the CLS on duty. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Perform venipuncture and skin puncture procedures according to physician orders, California regulations, and facility policies. Ensure accurate specimen collection for laboratory testing (e.g., hematology, chemistry, coagulation, microbiology).
• Explain collection procedures to patients and family members to reduce anxiety and ensure understanding. Identify patients correctly according to protocol and monitor for adverse reactions such as fainting.
• Label all test tubes accurately at the bedside. Record collection information, log procedures, and process or prepare specimens for transport to the main laboratory or reference labs.
• Assist in the processing, loading, and unloading of automated laboratory instrumentation as directed. Maintain the cleanliness and organization of venipuncture trays, work areas, and equipment.
• Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for data entry, specimen receipt, and manifest creation. Monitor and stock phlebotomy supplies in the lab and on nursing units.
• Adhere to strict infection control and safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and universal precautions. Comply with all HIPAA regulations regarding patient privacy. 

  Education, Training and Licenses Required:  

• High school graduate or equivalent.  

• Current CPT License for State of California.

Experience Required: 

• 1-2 years Phlebotomy experience preferred 

• Acute care setting experience preferred 

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge: 

• Certain level of retention.  

• Command of English language,

• Computer skills,

• Phlebotomy.  

• Operate minimal level analyzers.
