Sterile Processing Technician

Job Summary:


The Surgical Services Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) is responsible for the decontamination, sterilization, and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment to ensure a safe and efficient surgical environment. This role includes working with new hires and precepting, maintaining high standards of infection control, and supporting surgical teams. The position requires a minimum of four years of experience, with rotating weekend shifts and on-call duties in an acute care hospital setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Decontaminate, clean, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment according to established protocols.
  • Prepare and assemble sterile instrument trays and packs for surgical procedures.
  • Inspect instruments and equipment for proper function and cleanliness.
  • Collaborate with surgical teams to ensure timely availability of sterile supplies.
  • Train, guide, and precept new hires and less experienced staff members.
  • Maintain accurate records of sterilization cycles and instrument tracking.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety standards at all times.
  • Float between similar units as needed to support operational demands.
Required Skills & Certifications:

  • Minimum of 4 years' experience in sterile processing or related surgical services role.
  • Demonstrated ability to precept and train new staff.
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection control, and surgical instrumentation.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced acute care hospital environment.
  • Willingness to work rotating weekend shifts and be on-call.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:

  • Certification in Sterile Processing Technology (CSPDT or equivalent) preferred but not explicitly required.
  • Experience working with electronic charting systems such as Epic.
  • Familiarity with multiple surgical specialties and instrument sets.
Special Considerations:

  • Rotating weekend shifts from 1500 to 2330 hours.
  • On-call responsibilities are required.
  • Must be able to float between similar units as operational needs dictate.
  • Scrub colors and uniforms are provided according to department guidelines.
  • Work environment is an acute care hospital with 277 staffed beds.
Scheduling:

  • Monday through Friday with rotating weekend shifts.
  • Shift hours primarily from 1500 to 2330.
  • Block scheduling accommodations available at manager's discretion.
