The Water Division ensures a safe and reliable water supply for all of Orange County Utilities' customers and operates three regional water supply facilities and nine satellite facilities producing approximately 60 million gallons per day. The Solid Waste Division is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the position of "Equipment Mechanic I/II/III" . This is a highly skilled role involving maintenance and repair of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems on light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, with guidance responsibilities for other mechanics. This role requires on-site attendance and is not remote. Job Description General Functions: Performs highly skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, construction, fire apparatus, and other heavy equipment. Works on mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems of light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Provides guidance to other mechanics and assists with diagnosing complex repairs. Work is performed with independent judgment and limited direction, and performance is evaluated based on results and leadership of the team. Representative Duties Equipment Mechanic I Performs basic and routine mechanical work on light and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and vehicles. Assists with repairs under supervision and maintains records; uses hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and basic test equipment. Checks fluids, belts, hoses, and overall condition; ensures safety and cleanliness in work areas. Maintains documentation and follows oral or written instructions for repairs. Equipment Mechanic II Performs skilled mechanical work on automotive and heavy equipment, including major overhauls and complex repairs. Determines malfunctions, plans repairs, and uses diagnostic tools and diagnostic computers. Maintains records and provides guidance to team members; ensures safety and cleanliness in work areas. Equipment Mechanic III Provides technical guidance and may design or fabricate tools for specialized repairs. Performs complex repairs on a wide range of vehicles and heavy equipment; diagnoses and fixes complex systems. Supervises or mentors junior mechanics and maintains repair records; ensures safety standards are met. Performs preventative maintenance on emergency vehicles and related equipment. Qualifications Equipment Mechanic I High school graduate or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in maintenance and repair of automotive or heavy equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must complete Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification within three years of hire. Must provide tools and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license. May be required to obtain a Florida Commercial Driver’s License within one year of hire. Equipment Mechanic II High school graduate or equivalent and four (4) years of experience in maintenance and repair of automotive and/or heavy equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must complete two ASE or EVT certifications within three years of hire. Must provide tools and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and may need a Commercial Driver’s License within one year of hire. Equipment Mechanic III High school graduate or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in maintenance and repair of automotive, heavy equipment, and/or fire apparatus, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must complete two ASE (or EVT) certifications and obtain a third within two years of hire. Must provide tools and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and may need a Commercial Driver’s License within one year of hire.
