The nurse demonstrates how nursing practice impacts the organizational vision, mission, and goals, as well as the care delivery system. The nurse complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies. The Clinical Nurse is responsible for performing the nursing process, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. They deliver safe therapeutic nursing care in consultation and collaboration with interdisciplinary members of the patient care team. The nurse demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served. They possess the ability to assess and interpret appropriate data relative to age and provide nursing care as needed, as described in unit policies and procedures. The nurse demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development across the lifespan and understands the range of treatments needed by patients. The Clinical Nurse recognizes the patient or the patient’s designee as a source of control and a full partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care. They seek to develop effective communication with patients and families regarding the clinical plan of care. The nurse engages patients and families in active partnerships to plan and deliver care. They are aware of and can locate all advance care planning documentation and know the decision maker for their patients if they cannot speak for themselves. The Clinical Nurse fosters a healing environment for patients and families and keeps the patient and family at the center of all decisions. They assess the patient’s and family’s ability and readiness to learn, adapting the teaching plan according to the patient’s level of comprehension. The nurse completes comprehensive systematic assessments relevant to the practice setting. They integrate clinical reasoning and knowledge as the foundation for decision-making and manage patient care assignments appropriate to skill level. The Clinical Nurse identifies cultural needs and perspectives in relieving pain, discomfort, and suffering. They incorporate cultural competence, diversity, and inclusion into practice, viewing each patient as a unique person. The nurse balances patient rights and organizational responsibilities in providing professional and ethical care. They utilize ethical, legal, and regulatory principles in the provision of care and take responsibility for establishing therapeutic relationships with patients and families. The nurse creates individualized plans of care, evaluates patient responses, and intervenes to ensure optimal patient outcomes. They promote family presence and participation in care according to patient preferences. The Clinical Nurse evaluates and integrates best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient/family preferences for optimal health care delivery. They respect patient and family values when considering evidence-based practice decisions and participate in data collection and research. The nurse consults with experts when practice bases are questioned and minimizes risk of harm to patients, families, and self through effective systems and individual performance. They recognize and respond appropriately to unsafe situations and patient, family safety concerns. The Clinical Nurse articulates documentation of unsafe events and proposes solutions for future occurrences. They communicate safety risk concerns related to patients, families, and the health care team. The nurse integrates safety principles and goals into their own practice and uses available resources to prevent injury. They recognize their own limitations and seek assistance when needed. The Clinical Nurse utilizes and discusses policies, procedures, and guidelines to support practice and uses error reporting systems for near misses and errors. They administer medications and execute regimens as authorized by state licensure to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients. They apply technology and standardized practices that support safety and quality, practicing autonomously within their defined scope. The nurse delegates work appropriately and provides direction to support personnel, acknowledging risks associated with transitions. They promote active patient and family partnerships in care to enhance safety and integrate training for related point of care laboratory testing. The required education for this position is an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN). A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred. An essential part of this role includes preventing damage, misuse, or loss of equipment in the provision of patient care. The Clinical Nurse may be responsible for guiding, assisting, and directing unlicensed assistive personnel as defined by relevant policies.
