Assembly Supervisor

The Assembly Supervisor is responsible for leading and coordinating the day-to-day activities of the assembly team to ensure chairs and other products are assembled safely, efficiently, accurately, and according to company quality standards and production schedules.

This position provides hands-on leadership and side-by-side work with the assembly team. In addition, the Assembly Supervisor assigns work, monitors productivity and quality, resolves production issues, and develops employees.

The successful candidate combines strong manufacturing knowledge with effective people leadership and a focus on accountability, continuous improvement, safety, quality, and on-time delivery.

Essential Responsibilities

Production

• Direct daily assembly activities to meet production and shipping schedules.
• Assign employees to chair assembly stations based on production requirements, skill level, and staffing needs.
• Monitor production progress throughout the day and adjust priorities as needed.
• Identify and resolve workflow issues.
• Coordinate with production planning, welding, machining, upholstery, woodshop, supply chain, shipping, and other departments to maintain efficient product flow.
• Ensure work orders, drawings, specifications, and work instructions are followed.
• Monitor labor utilization and department productivity.

Quality

• Ensure assembled chairs and other products meet established quality standards and specifications.
• Conduct or coordinate quality inspections throughout the assembly process at each assembly stage.
• Identify recurring defects and work with employees and other departments to determine root causes.
• Implement corrective actions, mitigation, and follow up to ensure problems are resolved.
• Promote a culture of individual and team quality and responsibility.

Leadership

• Lead, coach, train, and develop assembly employees.
• Establish clear expectations for productivity, quality, attendance, 6S (safety & housekeeping), and teamwork.
• Provide ongoing feedback and recognize strong performance.
• Address performance and attendance issues promptly and consistently.
• Participate in hiring, onboarding, training, and performance evaluations.
• Utilize and maintain cross-training to increase department flexibility and employee capabilities.

Safety

• Enforce company safety policies and procedures.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
• Conduct or participate in safety meetings and training.
• Identify unsafe conditions and take immediate corrective action.
• Ensure employees use required PPE and follow safe work practices.
• Report accidents, injuries, and safety concerns according to company procedures.

Continuous Improvement

• Identify opportunities to improve productivity, quality, workflow, and employee efficiency.
• Participate in Lean manufacturing and continuous-improvement initiatives.
• Help develop and implement standardized work procedures.
• Reduce rework, scrap, downtime, and unnecessary movement.
• Recommend improvements to processes, work instructions, tools, station layout, and material flow.
• Use production data to identify trends and improvement opportunities.

Materials & Equipment

• Communicate shortages or material issues promptly.
• Ensure tools, equipment, and stations are properly maintained and used.

Communication & Administration

• Conduct daily production meetings or shift-start meetings as appropriate.
• Communicate production plans and priorities clearly to employees.
• Track and communicate department performance against established goals and KPIs.

Key Performance Indicators

The Assembly Supervisor will be accountable for measurable performance in areas such as:

• On-time Delivery
• Chairs per day
• Revenue per Production Hour
• Revenue
• Lead Time
• Total hours per Chair

Required Qualifications

• 1-3 years of manufacturing, assembly, woodworking, machining, welding, or related production experience.
• 1+ year supervisory or lead experience.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and production flow.
• Ability to read and understand work orders, drawings, specifications, and work instructions.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Ability to effectively coach and hold employees accountable.
• Strong verbal and written communication.
• Demonstrated organization skills.
• Basic computer proficiency.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years of formal supervisory experience.
• Production assembly experience.
• Experience with Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement.
• Experience with ERP/MRP or production-management software.
• Experience training and developing production employees.
• Familiarity with quality-control systems and root-cause analysis.
• Project Management experience.
• Associates or other degree.
• Bi-lingual English & Spanish

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to frequently bend, reach, stoop, and move throughout a manufacturing environment.
• Ability to lift and move materials consistent with the requirements of the position.
• Ability to safely perform or supervise the physical activities associated with the assembly process.

Success in the First 90 Days

A successful Assembly Supervisor should, within the first 90 days:

• Understand production's workflow, assembly team process, and inter-department dependencies.
• Understand production and assembly KPIs.
• Establish clear daily production expectations.
• Establish consistent daily communication.
• Establish self as a model of attendance, punctuality, and quality work.
• Build credibility and productive relationships with the assembly team, Operations Manager and Planning Manager.
• Identify best practices and opportunities within assembly processes and team.
• Understand cross-training opportunities applicable to team members.

Overall Objective:

Lead the assembly department to consistently deliver quality chairs and other products on schedule while developing employees, maintaining a safe workplace, and continuously improving the assembly process.
