Within the Internal Medicine - Clinical department, the Research Nurse supports clinical research operations by coordinating research protocols, delivering research-related patient care, ensuring regulatory compliance, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to advance clinical investigations.

The Research Nurse plays a critical role in supporting research participants and investigators throughout the clinical trial lifecycle. The Research Nurse works closely with Principal Investigators, research staff, sponsors, and clinical teams to ensure high-quality study execution, while the Research Nurse maintains compliance with institutional, regulatory, and sponsor requirements. At UT MD Anderson, this position contributes directly to patient-centered research and scientific advancement.

The ideal candidate will have clinical research, regulatory, and data management experience. The preferred candidate should be comfortable rotating through various departments and working with different Principal Investigators and research teams when needed or required to support divisional research activities.

Work Location: Texas Medical Center

The typical work schedule is Monday - Friday, 8am-5pm.

Work Arrangement: Hybrid; onsite requirements are dependent on departmental needs, with clinic days requiring onsite presence.

Responsibilities
Clinical Research Protocol Management
• Coordinate assigned clinical research protocols from study activation through study closure in collaboration with investigators, sponsors, and research teams
• Screen, evaluate, and determine participant eligibility through medical record review, protocol criteria review, and patient interviews
• Recruit, enroll, consent when delegated, schedule, and retain research participants while ensuring protocol compliance
• Coordinate protocol-required visits, laboratory testing, imaging, procedures, and clinical assessments
• Perform protocol-specific patient assessments and ongoing follow-up in outpatient settings
• Educate participants and caregivers regarding study requirements, investigational therapies, risks, adverse events, and follow-up expectations
• Maintain source documentation and document research activities within electronic medical records and research systems
• Coordinate care with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, regulatory personnel, data management teams, and sponsors
• Identify protocol deviations and implement corrective actions with research leadership and investigators
• Develop study workflow tools, tracking systems, reference materials, and operational plans
Research Data, Regulatory Compliance & Quality
• Maintain accurate, complete, and timely protocol documentation in accordance with institutional, sponsor, FDA, ICH-GCP, and federal requirements
• Collect, verify, and report protocol-specific clinical data accurately
• Enter research data into sponsor electronic data capture platforms and institutional research databases
• Resolve data queries within required timelines while maintaining data integrity
• Support sponsor monitoring visits, audits, quality assurance reviews, regulatory inspections, and internal reviews
• Collaborate with regulatory and data management teams to ensure reporting requirements are met
• Identify and report protocol deviations, violations, adverse events, serious adverse events, and unanticipated problems
• Maintain investigator files and required study documentation
• Support continuous quality improvement initiatives that strengthen compliance and data quality
Clinical Research Nursing Practice
• Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document patient care during study participation
• Perform protocol-required clinical assessments and evaluate responses to investigational therapies
• Identify, document, grade, and report adverse events using current CTCAE criteria and protocol requirements
• Collaborate with investigators and multidisciplinary teams to evaluate patient safety and treatment response
• Administer investigational agents and supportive therapies in accordance with scope of practice and institutional policy
• Perform specimen collection, phlebotomy, and delegated clinical procedures required by research protocols
• Coordinate laboratory testing, diagnostic procedures, consults, and treatment scheduling
• Monitor patients during and after investigational treatments as required by protocol
• Maintain investigational product accountability with Investigational Pharmacy when applicable
• Escalate clinical concerns promptly to support participant safety
Education, Collaboration & Operations
• Serve as a clinical resource for assigned studies and research protocols
• Educate patients, caregivers, research staff, and healthcare professionals regarding research procedures and investigational therapies
• Maintain proficiency in Epic, OnCore, CORe, RAVE, OPEN, Florence, and other study-specific systems
• Participate in protocol initiation meetings, investigator meetings, conferences, departmental meetings, and continuing education activities
• Maintain required competencies, licensure, certifications, and sponsor-required training
• Assist with orientation, mentoring, and training of new research personnel
• Coordinate prior authorizations, payer pre-certifications, prescription renewals, medication coordination, and participant scheduling when applicable
• Communicate with outside providers, sponsors, and collaborating institutions to obtain required study information
• Support workload balancing, divisional initiatives, quality improvement projects, and operational workflow coordination
• Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, accountability, cultural sensitivity, and compliance with HIPAA and institutional policies

EDUCATION

• Required: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
• Preferred: Bachelor's Degree Nursing.

WORK EXPERIENCE

• Required: 1 year Registered nurse experience.
