Athletic Trainer
The Athletic Trainer (AT) is responsible for the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries in student-athletes. The AT works collaboratively with coaches, physicians, parents, and school administrators to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all athletes while promoting safe participation in school sports programs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Injury Prevention and Education
- Develop and implement conditioning, warm-up, and injury prevention programs for athletes.
- Educate athletes and coaches on proper techniques, nutrition, hydration, and safe training practices.
- Ensure athletic equipment and facilities meet safety standards.
2. Injury Assessment and Management
- Evaluate injuries sustained during practices, games, and other athletic activities.
- Provide immediate care and first aid for injuries and coordinate emergency procedures when necessary.
- Maintain accurate records of injuries, treatments, and rehabilitation progress.
3. Rehabilitation and Treatment
- Design and supervise individualized rehabilitation programs for injured athletes.
- Monitor athlete progress and adjust treatment plans as needed.
- Collaborate with physicians, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers to ensure proper recovery.
4. Administrative Duties
- Maintain accurate medical records, including pre-participation physicals and consent forms.
- Communicate with coaches, parents, and school administration regarding athlete status and return-to-play protocols.
- Attend athletic events and practices to provide medical coverage.
5. Compliance and Professional Standards
- Adhere to state and national athletic training standards, school policies, and HIPAA regulations.
- Stay current with continuing education and best practices in athletic training and sports medicine.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Athletic Training or related field.
- Certification by the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers.
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
- Knowledge of sports medicine, injury prevention, and rehabilitation techniques.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Working Conditions
- Regular attendance at practices, games, and special athletic events.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and occasional travel for tournaments.
- Physically able to assist athletes and respond quickly in emergency situations.
