The City of Kodiak is recruiting for a full-time Heavy Fleet Mechanic in the Public Works Department. The Department is looking for an experienced team player that has a desire to be a part of a progressive Public Works Department working hard to serve the needs of our community.


Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of specialized and journey level duties involved in performing minor and major repairs to and maintaining a variety of mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems on light and heavy gasoline and diesel vehicles, emergency response vehicles/equipment, trucks, and equipment; inspects, diagnoses, overhauls, repairs, and adjusts engines, transmissions, and related vehicle systems and components; services and performs preventive maintenance duties on a variety of vehicles and equipment; conducts safety inspections; and maintains a variety of records and reports.


The City of Kodiak owns and operates a wide range of vehicles and equipment. The Heavy Fleet Mechanic is responsible for the efficient delivery of a variety of journey level duties in repair, maintenance, and record keeping on vehicles and equipment. The Heavy Fleet Mechanic must perform these duties in a manner that reflects positively on the City and the Department.

Examples Of Essential Duties

  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains a variety of mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems on light and heavy gasoline and diesel power vehicles, emergency response vehicles and equipment, trucks, and equipment.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, and locates mechanical difficulties on automobiles, trucks, and on a variety of maintenance and construction light and heavy equipment; determines extent of necessary repairs and estimates time and materials as needed.
  • Diagnoses, maintains, and repairs electrical system components, ignition systems, alternators, voltage regulators, starters, and batteries.
  • Diagnoses and repairs front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears, and chain drives.
  • Replaces or repairs faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
  • Keep engines tuned for efficient and dependable operation; repairs, replaces, and installs parts and components as necessary.
  • Repairs, adjusts, and replaces brake systems including wheel cylinders, masters cylinders, disc pads, machine drums and rotors, and hydraulic and air brakes.
  • Cleans, repairs and replaces fuel pumps, fuel lines, gauges and electrical wiring systems.
  • Performs front end repair; changes and balances tires.
  • Performs scheduled and emergency repairs and overhauls on pumps, compressors, valves, hydraulic cylinders, heat exchangers, and mobile and stationary hoisting equipment.
  • Performs oil spill prevention measures; inspects, maintains and repairs fuel transfer and storage equipment including tanks, valves, piping and spill response supplies; disposes of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
  • Test drives, commissions, and evaluates new equipment as assigned; conducts emergency repair work on vehicles and equipment in the field; transports equipment between locations as necessary.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance including changing oil and cleaning vehicles; performs safety inspections on all City vehicles and ensures all repairs have been completed.
  • Processes and prioritizes work orders; estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisitions materials; maintains work, time, and material records.
  • Performs electrical and acetylene welding duties including brazing and soldering on machinery and heavy equipment; fabricates special equipment, tools, parts and structures as needed. Performs fabrication of required components using CNC technology and software (i.e. using Torchmate or a similar software to design a new bumper and cutting out the components on a plasma table).
  • Operates, maintains, and repairs stationary diesel generating units including fuel tanks, transfer pumps, fuel and lube oil filtering and testing; performs startup of generators for emergency operations.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
  • Maintains and repairs shop equipment; cleans and maintains cleanliness of assigned work areas and facilities; disposes of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications


High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) and one year of specialized or technical training beyond high school and four years of automotive, diesel and heavy equipment repair experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid Alaska Driver's License or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
  • Valid Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B within six months of hire
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
LICENSING PREFERRED :
  • Valid Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) certifications
  • Valid Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A

  • Safely and effectively operate a variety of power and hand tools of the trade;
  • Work cooperatively with other departments, staff, and outside agencies;
  • Estimate time and materials needed for work; perform basic mathematical calculations;
  • Exercise good judgement and initiative in work functions;
  • Perform a variety of mechanic work in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing vehicles, equipment and components;
  • Inspect automotive, emergency and equipment to locate mechanical defects, to diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems and to determine corrective procedures;
  • Accurately prepare and maintain a variety of shop and repair/maintenance records and logs;
  • Perform repair work on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and other internal combustion engines and their components; perform a variety of welding work;
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting software applications;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in course of work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, twisting, lifting, grasping, finger dexterity, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.


Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a maintenance shop and outdoor field environment; to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull heavy amounts of weights; to operate assigned tools, equipment and vehicles; travel from site to site; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.


Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

WORKING CONDITIONS :
Work in an equipment shop setting and outdoor field environment. Exposure to noise, dust, grease, fumes, odors, gases, all types of weather and temperature conditions; subject to poor ventilation, vibrations, mechanical and electrical hazards; hazardous traffic conditions; work space restrictions and inadequate lighting; and work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Work with and safely handle hazardous materials and chemicals. Frequent physical exertion for required labor and/or equipment operation. Frequent contact with suppliers, other departments and staff.


Non-traditional work hours may be required with shift assignments on rotating work schedule and are based on the needs of the department. May be required to respond to emergency calls at any hour.
This position is mandated to participate in a drug and alcohol testing program regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Any employee occupying this position will be required to comply with the drug and alcohol testing program.
