Campus Safety - Security Officer Job Classification The responsibilities of this position are to fulfill the needs of a Security Officer, capable of working in the Patrol and Dispatch Division. This position is designed to assist in shift coverage and will float between both divisions and all shifts (morning, afternoon, nights). When not on shift coverage, the officer will mostly work Monday‑Friday on the afternoon shift. This position is considered an essential employee and will be responsible for working a shift schedule that can include working during a section of a 24‑hour day, working weekends and holidays, including during Sabbath hours. Qualifications summary This position requires employees who perform well under high‑stress situations and have excellent customer service skills. They must be detail oriented and capable of managing their daily tasks with little to no supervision. They must have great communication skills both verbally and in writing. Must be a Seventh‑day Adventist in good and regular standing. Duties and responsibilities General Provides direction, support, and service to the campus in both emergency and non‑emergency situations. Investigates all matters reported to the Office of Campus Safety, including burglaries, auto theft, vehicle accidents, lost and found property, fights, and other criminal matters or reported code of conduct violations on campus. Creates or completes incident reports. Maintains a professional skill level through continuing education courses pertaining to patrol operations, dispatch operations, and emergency preparedness. Other duties as assigned. Patrol Division Coordinates with local fire and law enforcement personnel for campus response, assisting them with the performance of their duties. Provides crowd control and management for graduation events or special events. Enforces parking and driving regulations through citation issuance and vehicle disposition. Ensures all campus buildings are secured and cleared of non‑authorized individuals daily per the department schedule. Ensures operational readiness through inventory and maintenance of supplies and equipment. Ensures proper recording, accuracy, safekeeping, and follow‑through of all investigative matters assigned. Learn and enforce Standard Operating Procedures, Student Code of Conduct, and university policy. Operates university vehicles in all weather conditions. Patrols campus grounds and buildings by foot and vehicle to deter crime and respond to suspicious situations. Provides financial escorts for the safe transport of monetary funds. Responds to all emergency calls, disturbances, fights, domestic disputes, fire alarms, and security alarms. Reports in proper attire and is fit for duty ten minutes prior to shift start. Reports maintenance problems and submits work orders to supervisor for mitigation. Responsible for the proper care and maintenance of uniforms, equipment, vehicles, radios, and keys. Other duties as assigned. Dispatch Division Communicates with local emergency services for response assistance. Coordinates with on‑campus departments for investigative reporting. Enforces parking and traffic regulations via video systems. Maintains operational readiness through inventory and maintenance of supplies and equipment. Ensures proper recording, accuracy, safekeeping, and follow‑through of all investigative matters assigned. Investigates and/or dispatches patrol officers for all matters reported to the Office of Campus Safety. Maintains communication and documents activity of patrol officers. Monitors the 911 On‑site Notification Line for outgoing calls. Monitors the Access Control System, fire and security alarm reporting system, and campus surveillance system. Performs university switchboard duties nightly (shift dependent). Manages vehicle and bicycle registration activities. Provides customer service for registration, citations, appeals, and general information. Receives lost/found items with proper documentation. Receives reports from the anonymous tip line. Handles after‑hours calls on behalf of University Housing and Plant Services (shift dependent). Regulates nighttime access onto campus via gatehouse activities (shift dependent). Activates the university emergency alert system. Searches applicable databases for vehicles, citations, and historical files (e.g., NIDA, Banner). Submits End of Shift (EOS) reports. Supervisory responsibilities While this position does not provide employee correction or evaluation, the officer is responsible for providing campus direction during emergencies and for enforcing university policies. Experience within law enforcement or the military is preferred. Ability to perform with limited direct supervision. Willingness to work shift assignments. Minimum age of 18 years. Ability to function well under stress. Excellent human‑relation skills, dealing with a wide variety of people. Valid Michigan driver’s license. Pass a criminal background check. Pass a drug screening. Education, Experience, and/or Certifications APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator Language Skills. Formal law enforcement training academy (BCSD Reserve Officer Training Academy accepted). Certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED. FEMA IS 100, 200, 700, and 800. Defensive Tactics (PPCT & OCAT). Police One Certifications. Leadership & Received Direction Once trained, this position should function with limited direction and be responsible for identifying daily tasks for the completion of duties. Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, distances, area, circumference, and volume; apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, and statistics. Other Skills Attention to detail in written communication, spreadsheets, and web‑forms. Observation of evidence in physical and electronic formats. Time management and self‑management. Organization of files, timelines, and case workflows. Fact‑finding and inquisitive nature to determine cause and effect. Technical competencies Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and other evidence‑based applications used for card access, alarm systems, and security cameras. Equipment/Software Used Communications equipment, including radios, phones, messaging applications (Teams). Alarm systems. Evidence gathering equipment (cameras, document scanners, other software). Mobile surveillance camera kit. Road and off‑road vehicles. Interpersonal interactions This position is a main point of contact for Campus Safety with the public. The employee is expected to meet the objectives of Campus Safety while promoting a Christian, friendly environment to our diverse campus and office community. Physical demands The job requires frequent standing, walking, reaching, and lifting. The employee must occasionally lift more than 100 pounds, frequently up to 50 pounds, and regularly up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work can be performed in all weather conditions associated with Michigan. Work environment Employees are expected to conduct security patrols at all hours in various weather conditions and may confront potentially dangerous situations.
