Patient Care Technician

This position works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The PCT performs and assists with individual activities of daily living as well as certain treatments for patient care under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse according to established policies, procedures and guidelines. The PCT will also perform general clerical duties for the nursing unit and function as a resource person to others on the unit.

Responsibilities include prioritizing and organizing care of assigned patients, performing basic nurse's aide skills; documenting on patient's chart, any treatments and pertinent observations; maintaining a clean, safe and orderly unit; and performing general receptionist duties for the unit/department including the answering of the phone, referring calls, answering intercom, taking of messages, ordering supplies, directing visitors, patient's families, employees and other members of the public to the appropriate areas of the hospital.

Other duties and responsibilities include demonstrating MyMichigan Health's mission, vision and values; providing for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures; emergency care/safety; attending monthly department meetings and reading weekly communication; possessing an understanding of infection prevention and control measures designed to prevent the spread of infectious disease; maintaining patient rights and confidentiality; providing excellent customer service; meeting and maintaining MyMichigan Health's behavioral standards; behaving in a courteous, professional manner at all times with patients, visitors, and co-workers; demonstrating the ability to interpret information and reports pertinent data to the physician; demonstrating the ability to organize and prioritize the needs of the unit; demonstrating a general ability to manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit; sharing information and reports significant changes and/or abnormal findings to appropriate team members in a timely manner; participating in regulatory surveys; participating in the performance improvement activities, quality initiatives programs, and patient experience initiatives; assisting with orientation and ongoing competencies; providing a safe and secure environment for patient care; demonstrating understanding of role in emergency preparedness procedures; obtaining and organizing charts and paperwork for incoming patients daily; calling physicians' offices to obtain all necessary paperwork for each patient; performing general clerical duties such as copying, filing and faxing; maintaining a clean and tidy work area daily; demonstrating customer service evidence by greeting all members of the community upon entry into the unit; and other duties as assigned.

Certifications and licensures include Patient Care Technician (PCT) MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification; Basic Life Support (BLS); and Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (TEAM ADVANCED).

Required education includes a high school diploma or equivalent.

Experience, training and skills include dysphagia and transfer training within 6 months of hire or transfer; unit education/orientation within 90 days of hire or transfer; orientation to all other inpatient units and the emergency department within 6 months of hire or transfer; knowledge of medical terminology; interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner; competency in Microsoft Windows; and knowledge of medical terminology.

Physical/mental requirements and typical working conditions include exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death; ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position; ability to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description; overall vision and hearing are necessary with or without assisted device(s); frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time; some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake; overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling; physical demand level: medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% of the workday) 10 lbs.
