Vascular Surgical Technologist / Surgical Scrub Assistant

Location: Darien, Connecticut

Position Summary

The Surgical Technologist/Surgical Scrub Assistant supports physicians and the procedural team during diagnostic and therapeutic vascular-interventional procedures performed in the OBL angiosuite. This role is responsible for maintaining a safe sterile field, anticipating procedural needs, preparing specialized equipment and supplies, assisting with patient and family education, and supporting efficient workflow before, during, and after procedures.

The ideal candidate has strong endovascular experience, advanced knowledge of sterile technique, vascular anatomy, interventional products, and angiosuite equipment. This position does not include independently generating x-ray exposure or setting radiographic technique; those duties must be performed by the physician or appropriately qualified Radiologic Technologist.

• Central venous access, ports, and central-line procedures
• Venograms and IVC filter placement
• AV shunt imaging and interventions
• Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) interventions
• Embolization procedures, as applicable

Responsibilities

• Assist physicians with the preparation and completion of invasive vascular and endovascular procedures.
• Perform scrub and circulating duties in accordance with sterile technique, facility policy, infection-control standards, and physician direction.
• Prepare the angiosuite, sterile field, instruments, supplies, implants, medications within the sterile field as permitted, and specialty equipment for scheduled procedures.
• Anticipate physician and procedural-team needs, including appropriate wires, catheters, balloons, stents, sheaths, thrombectomy devices, access supplies, and other procedural products.
• Demonstrate detailed knowledge of procedures performed in the OBL and explain the general procedural process to patients and families within the role’s scope and under clinical direction.
• Operate and maintain working knowledge of angiosuite equipment, including ultrasound, digital subtraction angiography, cine radiography, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), atherectomy systems, and AngioJet devices.
• Assist with post-processing radiographic images on imaging equipment and within the PACS system, as authorized by facility policy and role scope.
• Confirm availability, integrity, and expiration status of sterile supplies, implants, medications, and equipment before each procedure.
• Communicate with physicians before procedures regarding planned approach, required equipment, specialty products, and anticipated clinical needs.
• Maintain accurate inventory levels for specialty wires, catheters, balloons, stents, ports, central lines, and procedural supplies; assist with ordering, stocking, product evaluation, and waste reduction.
• Support room turnover, equipment cleaning, sterile processing workflow, and readiness for subsequent cases.
• Follow all patient-safety, infection-prevention, HIPAA, documentation, quality-assurance, and emergency-response policies.
• Participate in staff education, competency validation, product training, and process-improvement initiatives.

Required Qualifications

• Completion of a surgical technology program and current certification as a Surgical Technologist from a nationally recognized certifying body,  or eligibility through another pathway permitted under Connecticut law.
• Current BLS Healthcare Provider certification required by date of hire.
• Demonstrated experience serving as a scrub assistant and/or first assist during sterile invasive procedures.
• Experience supporting endovascular or vascular-interventional procedures.
• Thorough knowledge of sterile technique, aseptic practice, surgical instrumentation, infection prevention, and procedural room workflow.
• Working knowledge of vascular anatomy, physiology, and common vascular disease processes.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced procedural environment, anticipate clinical needs, and communicate clearly with physicians, nurses, technologists, patients, and families.
• Ability to safely lift, position, and assist patients and equipment in accordance with facility policy.

Preferred Qualifications

• One or more years of experience in a vascular-interventional, interventional radiology, catheterization lab, hybrid OR, or office-based laboratory setting.
• Extensive experience with angiography, peripheral vascular interventions, atherectomy, thrombectomy, embolization, venous interventions, and central venous access procedures.
• Experience with IVUS, atherectomy devices, mechanical thrombectomy systems, and AngioJet equipment.
• Familiarity with PACS, image post-processing, inventory-control systems, and implant/supply tracking.
