Mechanical Engineer I

Job Overview We are launching people to the Moon and Mars. Join our team that is making history today by supporting NASA’s vision with the COMET contract. The role manages overall implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. Responsibilities include supporting the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and launch services programs. Responsibilities Provide technical leadership for SLS/Orion Arms and Umbilicals subsystems (AUS), including procedure development and operational support. Attain system certifications for system and console operations; operate AUS system console for vehicle tank fill, drain, and launch operations. Oversight of new installation and construction activities to ensure compliance with contract documents. Create and execute component and subsystem design verification/acceptance plans and test methods to validate performance against requirements. Conduct system testing and validation, troubleshoot equipment failures, interpret analysis data, technical drawings, and schematics to resolve anomalies and provide written corrective action. Generate procedures to maintain equipment and systems in the prescribed condition. Coordinate maintenance and operations work with technicians, engineers, and safety personnel. Prepare all essential system engineering documentation components for a complete and viable system. Plan, develop cost estimates, manage, and schedule assigned projects. Interface with client representatives and manage task completion on schedule and within budget to client satisfaction. Desired Experience Mechanical systems operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Hydraulic systems operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Knowledge of mechanical statics and dynamics. Integration of electrical components including transducers, switches, solenoid valves, and the like. Familiarity with ASME BPVC, ASTM, and MIL‑SPEC standards. Experience with Rockwell Automation PLC (RS Logix 5000, PLC/5, Factory Talk View, etc.). Excellent writing, communication, presentation, and customer interface skills. Ability to work effectively in a team environment. Ability to coordinate work across multiple project disciplines. Time‑management skills to prioritize multiple projects without compromising accuracy. Self‑motivated, proactive, and able to work independently or with minimal supervision. Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance if required. Experience in guiding less experienced engineers. Ability to perform root‑cause failure analysis to component level. Qualifications Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering or a technical equivalent from an accredited institution. Valid U.S. Driver’s License. Physical Requirements Physical work may involve climbing stairs, wearing hearing and eye protection, and standing or sitting for extended periods. The position is located on a hazardous testing facility and requires ability to evacuate buildings quickly in an emergency. Walking on uneven terrain and climbing ladders or platforms may be required. Work Environment Work inside and outside the test complex. Conditions may include traveling daily to different areas on site, walking on paved areas, gravel, rocks, dirt, and sand. All work must be completed safely in accordance with NASA and company safety standards. Other Essential Functions Accurate written and verbal communication. Travel may be required to support the position, including potential travel to a customer location. The role may require occasional overtime, weekends, or shift work. Attendance of full‑time hours is required.
