Mechanical Engineer III in Pasadena, CA — $49.00–$76.60/hr DOE, 1st shift, temporary contract. Design electronic packaging and mechanical assemblies for spacecraft hardware.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Build the mechanical design around electronics that must survive fabrication, test, and flight.

Develop mechanical and electronic packaging designs for flight electronics, microelectronics, photonic hardware, and ground support equipment. Coordinate CAD design, drawings, fabrication instructions, reviews, and hardware qualification.

This is an on-site contract assignment with detailed technical documentation and review requirements. This temporary assignment is currently scheduled through 9/24/2028. The 9/80 schedule includes extended workdays; exact daily hours and the alternating day off will be confirmed before submission.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Coordinate design work with delivery leads, technical leads, and project managers
• Develop mechanical and electronic hardware designs with engineering teams
• Create 3D CAD models, drawings, layouts, and design studies
• Revise components and assemblies for manufacturability and structural integrity
• Coordinate with manufacturing, analysts, machine shops, and quality assurance
• Write fabrication and assembly instructions for packaging, harnesses, and mechanical assemblies
• Present designs at technical reviews and close action items
• Perform trade studies and develop requirements for qualification and fabrication

WHAT YOU NEED

• Bachelor degree or higher in mechanical engineering or a related technical discipline with corresponding experience
• U.S. citizenship as required by the client
• Advanced mechanical engineering knowledge covering structures, configuration, mechanisms, analysis, integration, and test
• Strong CAD proficiency with NX or SolidWorks
• Practical knowledge of ASME Y14.xx and Y14.5 GD&T
• Mechanical and electronic packaging experience, including PWBs, chassis, manufacturing, and harness assemblies
• Ability to independently execute design work and coordinate fabrication, assembly, and qualification

NICE TO HAVE

• Spacecraft flight electronics development and test
• Recent NX versions and JPL drawing release procedures
• Soldering, SMT assembly, cable assembly, and electromechanical analyses
• Mentor or Altium PWB tools
• NASA/JPL standards and vendor fabrication coordination

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Use a computer to review detailed models, drawings, calculations, and technical records, and participate in on-site engineering and design reviews. Any hardware-handling or facility-access demands will be reviewed before submission.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

On-site engineering offices and laboratories, with technical reviews and coordination around developmental or flight hardware. Follow laboratory and facility access procedures. PPE is required and provided where applicable, and all site safety procedures apply.
