Elder Law and Probate Paralegal

We are seeking an experienced  Elder Law Paralegal  with a focus on  Probate Administration to join our practice. The ideal candidate will possess a robust background in probate proceedings—including guardianships, decedent estates, and contested matters—as well as some knowledge in estate planning, trusts, and Medicaid. This role requires an individual who can  immediately  contribute to our legal team, supporting attorneys and clients with advanced expertise and professionalism.

Primary Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive paralegal support in all aspects of probate, including guardianships, decedent estates, contested matters, and related court filings.
• Knowledge of preparation and execution of both simple and complex estate planning documents, such as wills, trusts, and powers of attorney.
• Conduct legal research and analysis pertaining to probate, trusts and estates, and elder law topics.
• Prepare, review, and manage legal documents and correspondence with meticulous attention to detail.
• Coordinate communication with clients, courts, and other professionals to ensure efficient case management and timely resolution.
• Support attorneys in contested probate matters, including discovery, trial preparation, and document review.
• Maintain organized case files, calendars, deadlines, and workflow systems to ensure smooth operations within the legal team.
• Assist in the administration of trusts and estates, including asset inventories, beneficiary communications, and relevant filings.

Qualifications

• Minimum of three years’ probate paralegal experience in Rhode Island, knowledge of Massachusetts and Connecticut probate a definite plus!
• Comprehensive knowledge of probate, knowledge of elder law and estate planning.
• Proven expertise in preparing and filing court documents and liaising with court personnel.
• Demonstrated proficiency in drafting and managing client documents and agreements.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills, with experience engaging clients, court staff, and external organizations such as nursing facilities.
• Outstanding organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
• Ability to operate independently and efficiently manage a demanding caseload from the outset.
• Ability to operate as a team member in both our legal and fiduciary departments.
• Familiar with legal software or the ability to learn legal software such as Amicus, Caret, and Wealth Counsel, Microsoft Office Suite, and electronic court filing systems.

Preferred qualifications

• Minimum of three years paralegal experience in probate, knowledge of elder law.
• Demonstrated knowledge of guardianships, decedent estates, and contested probate matters.
• Some knowledge of estate planning procedures and relevant legal documentation.
• Familiarity with elder law and related legal issues is highly desirable.
• Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Outstanding legal acumen, analytical abilities, and attention to detail.
• Team-oriented approach, with proven success collaborating with attorneys, clients, and other staff.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally and empathetically with clients.
• Excellent communication skills when working with other legal entities such as the courts and other attorneys.
• Proficiency with legal research tools, document management systems, and standard office software.
