Surgical Technologist - 36 hours, Days

Job Overview Position: Surgical Technologist – Scrub Specialist. Assist surgical teams during operative procedures in compliance with Medicare Conditions of Participation and hospital policy. Provide sterile preparation, instrument loading, patient positioning, and operative support. Schedule & Compensation Shift: Day Shift, 12 hours (07:00‑19:30), Monday through Friday. Hours: 36 per week. Hiring range: $24.44 – $44.00 per hour. Sign‑on bonus may be available based on eligibility confirmed during interview. Key Responsibilities Scrub for all physicians in assigned service area, demonstrating proficiency and independent functioning in the scrub role. Prepare the operating room, including selection and checking of case carts, preference cards, instrument pans, packs, and sterile supplies. Anticipate and request special equipment and supplies from the circulating nurse, and set up back table and Mayo tray according to surgeon preference cards. Perform surgical counts in partnership with the circulating nurse, following UMMMC surgical count policy. Respond to needs of surgeons and assistants during cases, including emergency situations, and utilize OR equipment such as microscopes, CUSA, steam sterilizers, suction, and compressed air/gas. Pass and track instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies; label all medications and solutions on the sterile field; monitor sponges, needles, and instruments throughout the case; and safeguard specimens to prevent loss or damage. Position Qualifications Successful completion of an accredited school of surgical technology and acquisition of a surgical technologist certification (AST or equivalent, nationally recognized). Certification must be current at hire date. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, renewed every two years, and active AST membership with required educational units and certification. Demonstrated knowledge of specialized surgical technology practices, including sterile procedures, instrument handling, and OR equipment usage. Ability to function independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high‑quality, evidence‑based clinical care. Strong teamwork skills and willingness to precept co‑workers and promote collaboration within the surgical team.
