Job Summary Job type: Full Time Shift: Days Hours GENERAL DUTIES: Assists in the delivery of orthopedic care through application, removal, and maintenance of casts, dressings, traction, and other orthopedic devices. May instruct patients on cast care, crutch training, skin care, and hygiene under the direction of the supervising physician. The orthopedic technician may scrub on orthopedic surgical procedures. The technician may have responsibility for instrument preparation and assembly of orthopedic tables and equipment. Restrictions Prescribe medication Admit or discharge patients Interpret lab tests, x-rays, or diagnostic studies Place pins for skeletal fracture Set/manipulate bones Suture or tie sutures Clamp or cut tissue Responsibilities Adhere to DRMC’s service standards and ICON practice standards Support the physician during casting procedures Assemble supplies and equipment as appropriate for procedures Procure additional supplies and equipment as needed during procedures Restock supplies used during and after procedures Prepare patients adequately for casting procedures Apply casts according to the physician’s requests Repair and remove casts in compliance with physician’s requests Assist with reduction of dislocations and fractures Set up traction equipment correctly and to physician specifications Maintain necessary skills and competencies to support the department Monitor changes in materials, methods, and biomechanics to maintain competency Identify strengths and opportunities for professional development, set goals, and document progress Meet identified professional development goals through various educational forums Foster education and development of others by sharing information learned Create a positive environment conducive to coworker development through mentoring, teaching, orienting, role modeling, and team participation Complete annual mandatory training activities within established timeframes Ensure a safe environment and safe delivery of care Identify and document functional capacity and cognitive ability to determine risk for falls/injury and ability to comply with treatment plan Check environmental factors affecting patient/staff safety on an ongoing basis Appropriately identify patients prior to implementing any intervention Communicate incidents involving self, patients, staff, or visitors using the institution’s quality reporting mechanism Demonstrate knowledge of institution’s fire, safety, and infection control programs consistently Demonstrate proper body mechanics and use of appropriate assistive devices routinely Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications Position qualifications: Required: Graduate of a formal training program or equivalent experience with documented competency Current American Heart Association BLS Certification (maintained at all times) Preferred: National Certification preferred Organization Description Desert Care Network serves the healthcare needs of the Coachella Valley and Morongo Basin regions in Southern California with three hospitals: Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio, and Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree.
