Job Title: Welder – 1st or 2nd Shift

Job Description

This 1st shift welder role focuses on performing high‑quality MIG (GMAW) and Flux‑Cored (FCAW) welding on structural steel and fabricated components in a fabrication shop environment. You will read and interpret blueprints and weld symbols, lay out and fit parts to precise specifications, and ensure all welds meet quality and safety standards. Work Environment

This role is on 1st shift with a 4x10 schedule, working approximately 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Overtime is typically available on Fridays, generally not mandatory, but you should be comfortable with mandatory overtime when required, with the opportunity to reach around 55 hours in a week. The position is based in an AISC‑certified fabrication shop focused on structural steel, where you work with welding equipment, structural steel components, hand tools, grinders, and precision measuring instruments. The environment emphasizes safety, organization, and quality, with established safety procedures and AISC quality standards guiding daily work. Steel toe boots are required as part of the dress code, and the shop culture encourages collaboration, continuous improvement, and long‑term employment.

Responsibilities

• Perform MIG (GMAW) and Flux‑Cored (FCAW) welding on structural steel and fabricated components according to job specifications.
• Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings to determine layout, weld type, and sequence of operations.
• Lay out, fit, and weld parts to specification, ensuring correct dimensions, alignment, and fit‑up.
• Inspect welds for quality, defects, and compliance with applicable standards and internal quality requirements.
• Use hand tools, grinders, and measuring instruments such as tape measures, squares, and calipers to verify accuracy and quality.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safety‑focused work area in accordance with shop policies.
• Work collaboratively with fabrication, engineering, and quality teams to resolve issues and complete projects efficiently.
• Follow all safety procedures and adhere to AISC quality requirements throughout the welding and fabrication process.
• Adapt to a variety of tasks and projects, avoiding repetitive, single‑station work by taking on different assignments as needed.
• Participate in performance reviews and apply feedback to continuously improve welding skills and productivity.

Essential Skills

• 2+ years of MIG welding experience in a fabrication shop setting, or a combination of weld schooling and experience equivalent to at least 1 year of hands‑on work.
• Proficiency in MIG (GMAW) welding on structural steel components.
• Proficiency in Flux‑Cored (FCAW) welding.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings accurately.
• Experience laying out parts, fitting up, and welding assemblies to specification.
• Structural welding experience or familiarity with structural steel fabrication.
• Skilled in using hand tools, grinders, and measuring instruments such as tape measures, squares, and calipers.
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to inspect welds for quality and defects.
• Commitment to following safety procedures and AISC quality requirements.
• Ability to work collaboratively with fabrication, engineering, and quality teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Formal welding schooling or training that can compensate for up to 1 year of required experience.
• Prior experience working with structural steel in an AISC‑certified shop is a plus.
• Comfort working overtime, including occasional mandatory overtime when needed.
• Willingness to participate in mentorship programs, skills development, and welding competitions.
• Interest in long‑term growth and advancement within a fabrication shop environment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Wausau, WI.

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $28.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
