Senior Accountant

Our client, a mission-driven nonprofit organization, is seeking a Senior Accountant to support day-to-day accounting operations and help maintain the integrity of financial reporting. 

Location:
San Francisco, CA. This position follows a hybrid work schedule, 3 days/week in the office. 

Job Description:
This is a highly visible, hands-on role that will contribute to financial accuracy, process improvement, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and comfortable working in a collaborative environment with evolving processes. 

Responsibilities:

• Manage general ledger and sub-ledger activity, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and restricted funding activity
• Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial data in accordance with applicable accounting standards
• Prepare and review monthly account reconciliations and balance sheet schedules
• Oversee invoicing, collections, and aging analysis to ensure timely receipt of funds
• Monitor restricted funding and contract-related expenditures for compliance with budget and terms
• Prepare cash flow reporting and support cash forecasting activities
• Review journal entries, account balances, and financial transactions for accuracy
• Maintain proper documentation, record retention, and audit-ready support schedules
• Support fixed asset tracking and reconciliation processes
• Assist with audits, filings, and collaboration with external stakeholders
• Contribute to process improvements, system enhancements, and accounting best practices
• Support KPI tracking and reporting for management
• Participate in ad hoc accounting projects and operational initiatives

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• 3 years of progressive accounting experience with general ledger and financial reporting exposure
• Nonprofit experience required
• Grants donations experience required
• Heavy operational accounting / full-cycle accounting
• Heavy month-end close ownership
• Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting standards
• Proficiency in Excel and experience working with accounting systems
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• High attention to detail and the ability to identify discrepancies
• Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Experience in nonprofit accounting or working with restricted funding preferred
