Inpatient Behavior Health Position

Elmhurst Hospital Center (EHC) is the major tertiary care provider in the borough of Queens. The hospital is comprised of 545 beds and is a Level I Trauma Center, an Emergency Heart Care Station and a 911 Receiving Hospital. 8:00 A.M 4:30 P.M, with rotating weekends and holidays (37.5 hours)

Purpose of Position: Under general supervision, serves as a licensed, independent practitioner responsible for planning, coordinating, delivering and managing comprehensive psychiatric and mental health care services in a health care setting. Ensures patient and family-centered quality care to improve outcomes and patient experience, in accordance with applicable NYC Health + Hospitals policies and procedures, state and federal rules and regulations and nursing standards of care. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provides continuous comprehensive psychiatric and mental health nursing care, including preventive and supportive health care services to psychiatric patients and their families.
• Manages acute and chronic mental health problems and coordinates health care for psychiatric patient population.
• Consistent with the established nursing practice, differentiates between normal and abnormal findings in the screening process to detect changes in health status that require physician's intervention.
• Develops and maintains partnerships with community-based organizations and makes referrals to consulting physicians and/or other health care professionals and community agencies, as necessary.
• Evaluates and interprets patient data, in order to plan and implement appropriate nursing interventions.
• Consults with physicians and other health care practitioners in the evaluation of health screening findings to make prospective decisions about treatment that will best support improved outcomes and patient satisfaction.
• Formulates differential diagnosis and the plan of care based on medical history, physical exams, nursing assessment and other pertinent information.
• Develops, implements, and evaluates patient plan of care. Determines effectiveness and modifies as per clinical standards and practice protocols, where needed, to achieve medical and health goals.
• Orders, conducts, and interprets diagnostic and laboratory tests. Identifies and may prescribe appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions and therapies.
• Manages a patient session schedule allowing for both scheduled and non-emergent unscheduled visits; maintains a work schedule that ensures availability and continuity of care; ensures optimal availability and utilization of appropriate resources.
• Provides education, guidance, and direction to psychiatric nursing staff and other appropriate members of the health care team to ensure quality and safe medical and nursing care is provided.
• Provides education and counseling to psychiatric patients and their families regarding health status, treatment and progress, medication management, disease prevention and health promotion, records and maintains a system of relevant documentation.
• Performs other related duties, as directed.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the New York State Department of Education (NYSED); and
• Current certification to practice as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner issued by the NYSED; and
• Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
