Minimum Qualifications - High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications - Prior hands-on experience with molecular biology laboratory techniques (DNA/RNAextraction,PCR, RT-PCR, gel electrophoresis) or conventional virology is preferred; training in specific laboratory techniques will be available upon hire for candidates who meet the minimum qualifications.

Position Summary - This position is responsible for sample submissions in support of both molecular and conventional virology testing at the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center. Specific job duties include biological sample preparation,DNAand/orRNAextraction,PCR/RT-PCR/real-timePCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, digital imaging of gels, post-PCRpurification, and preparation ofDNAsequencing samples in a fast-paced diagnostic laboratory. The position also supports the conventional virology section (eg. cell media preparation and virus propagation), trains/orientates student workers, and assists with industry research services. Other responsibilities include data collection, data entry, assistance with maintaining laboratory supplies and stock solutions, and communicating results with other members of the lab team. The job may occasionally involve work after hours or on weekends, and any other duties needed by the PI.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies - Standard laboratory skills, sterile techniques, including experience with or aptitude for molecular biological techniques (PCR/RT-PCR, nucleic acid extraction, gel electrophoresis).Familiarity with conventional virology techniquesAbility to organize and report data and prepare summaries for internal and client reporting.General computer knowledge, including the ability to use spreadsheets.Good communication and time management skills, and the ability to work with multiple labs to complete tasks.Ability to provide basic guidance to student workers.
