Director, Patient Care (Emergency Services)

Job Description Directs and has 24/7 responsibility for the nursing practice, patient care delivery, human and fiscal resources, and regulatory compliance of a designated department or service line within the hospital. Participates, with senior nursing leadership, in setting strategic direction for key programs. Job Responsibilities Directs and has 24-hour responsibility for the overall assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care of a designated department or service line within the hospital. Participates, with senior nursing leadership, in developing nursing strategic plan for area of responsibility. Implements policies and programs that align with strategic goals and organization mission, vision, and values. Creates and communicates a shared vision, through influential leadership, to effectuate hospital and organizational goals. Functions as a key clinical leader and regularly collaborates with physician leaders and department administrators to achieve top level outcomes. Upholds and advances high quality patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Ensures a professional work environment is created and maintained that fosters team member respect, engangement, accountability and optimal patient outcomes. Promotes appreciative inquiry and evidence-based, ethical and compassionate practice. Directs staffing for patient care units. Collaborates with HR to fulfill requirements. Selects, develops, manages and evaluates nurse leaders. Provides direction and guidance to patient care unit supervisors and managers. Facilitates performance reviews, promotions, pay and corrective actions. Serves as a role model for standards of professional practice (clinical, educational and leadership). Participates in succession planning and provides career development planning for team members. Educates patient care unit supervisors and managers in new and existing department procedures and systems (information systems, fiscal responsibility, etc.). Develops and oversees management of budgets. Monitors budget performance and develops and communicates action plans when variances are present. Creates and monitors performance metrics that support decision-making to achieve optimal performance levels. Ensures adherence to the established care delivery model, using knowledge of scope and standards of practice. Facilitates continual compliance for all responsible departments with the JC, CMS, New York State, DOH, Public Health Law, HIPPA regulations and System, hospital and department standards. Ensures all regulations and standards are addressed and current in policies and procedures. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of clinical competencies for patient population of oversight in order to direct patient care. Maintains current knowledge of scope and standards of practice, healthcare legislation, and population health. Identifies and leads opportunities to initiate operational change across departments/service line unit using evidence-based strategies and solutions. Performs related duties as required. Job Qualifications Master's Degree, required. (Bachelors or Master’s Degree must be in nursing) Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State, required. Specialized certifications, as needed. 8-12 years of nursing experience and 7+ years of leadership/management experience, required.
