Supervisory Registered Respiratory Therapist

Overview The Supervisory Registered Respiratory Therapist provides expert leadership in respiratory care, overseeing the Sleep Program and EEG Lab. The incumbent evaluates operations, recommends improvements, manages staff and fiscal responsibilities, organizes workloads, sets performance standards, and uses data to guide patient care and operational efficiency. Responsibilities Oversee the daily operations and staff of the respiratory department to ensure high-quality patient care and regulatory compliance. Assign and evaluate staff work; resolve issues that may affect patient examinations or treatment. Evaluate new procedures, products, and equipment; recommend and implement emerging practices. Provide instruction and training to new staff; interview candidates and recommend selections, advancements, and promotions; implement disciplinary actions when necessary. Guide staff on complex or non-standard clinical cases; manage the department's budget and fiscal resources. Represent the department in interdisciplinary meetings and facility-level committees. Conduct audits of inpatient and outpatient records to ensure proper documentation of care, assessments, procedures, outcomes, and patient safety. Provide information to leadership to support regulatory compliance and quality care; maintain departmental policies, procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs. Assist in determining quality assurance and compliance data to be collected; participate in professional meetings and development activities. Monitor technical and clinical competence of personnel through training, results review, and quality control checks; evaluate the effectiveness of new procedures and equipment. Investigate workflow or performance issues and implement corrective actions. Ensure strong electronic health record proficiency, excellent communication skills, and proven team leadership abilities. Preferred experience includes 3–5 years in respiratory therapy, sleep studies, CPAP, PFT, or EEG, with at least 2 years in a lead or management role. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA policy. Education: Completion of a respiratory care program accredited by CoARC or its successor. Licensure: Full, current, and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT (for GS-0601). Credential: Valid, current, and unrestricted RRT credential. English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. Grandfathering Provision: May qualify under the VA Qualification Standard for current VHA employees in this occupation who meet criteria. Grade Determinations: Supervisory Registered Respiratory Therapist – GS-13, including demonstrated experience and KSAs as described (policy development, evaluation of procedures, complex analytics, coordination of care, supervisory abilities, and fiscal management). Experience: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-12 level, with demonstrated ability to develop policies, supervise staff, coordinate work, and manage a complex patient care program. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Ability to plan and establish an integrated respiratory care program, recommend improvements, supervise employees, and manage fiscal aspects; assignments at higher levels require significant scope and complexity (at least 25% of time). Preferences: Strong leadership in respiratory therapy, sleep studies, CPAP, PFT, or EEG with management experience; strong EHR proficiency and communication skills. Physical Requirements: Work in patient care areas; extensive interaction with patients, staff, physicians, families; ability to move equipment and lift up to 40 pounds; bending and possible exposure to body fluids. Duties (Operational) Supervisory RRTs oversee the department’s daily operations, assign and evaluate staff, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Manage the budget and fiscal resources; represent the department in interdisciplinary and facility-level committees. Audit inpatient and outpatient records to ensure proper care documentation; maintain policies, procedures, and quality assurance programs. Attend professional meetings and development activities; monitor staff competence and provide ongoing training and quality control. Evaluate new procedures and equipment; investigate and correct workflow or performance issues. Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 7:00 A.M. – 4:30 P.M.
