Job Summary The respiratory therapist is a healthcare professional employed to perform all respiratory care diagnostic and therapeutic procedures provided by the Department of Respiratory Care. They should be energetic and motivated to support the success of a growing service. The respiratory therapist should refer to supervisory personnel in any doubtful situation. Responsibilities and Requirements Position accountabilities and performance criteria (%) Demonstrate ability to relate to coworkers in a professional and respectful manner, to assure and promote a culture of safety. Perform respiratory-related therapeutic and diagnostic maneuvers in accordance with established policies and procedures of the department. Clinical Procedures and Patient Care Implements and assesses oxygen and therapeutic gas function. Ensure proper setup and implementation of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Provide aerosolized medication, CPT and IPV, and setup/monitor ventilators in accordance with policies. Communicate with peers and staff to improve inter- and intradepartmental services; address and resolve problems with appropriate personnel. Perform CPR and diagnostic procedures including ABG analysis, pulse oximetry, and nitric oxide studies. Assess and reassess each patient’s status to determine care needs and response to treatment. Vital signs pre/post therapy; assess physician orders; pre/post assessment for therapy tolerance and response; oxygen requirements; sputum characteristics. Special duties: interact with physicians and nurses; may work in ICU; responsibilities in critical areas (ER, OR, Code). Routine checks on life support units; assist with bronchoscopy and minor invasive procedures; bedside studies and pulmonary function procedures. Provide input on patient care via physician consultations; demonstrate independent thinking; assist with prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia. Quality and Compliance Attends department meetings and required training; maintain attendance records; communicate therapy goals with physicians. Complete charting/charging timely; follow policies; report quality issues to management. Age-appropriate care for Infant, Child, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric populations. Specialized care as appropriate (restraints, pain management, abuse assessment) with adherence to safety guidelines. Standards and Certifications Minimum education: Graduate of an AMA-approved school; Minimum experience: leadership desirable; Required registry/licensure: NBRC-registered; MO Licensure within 6 months of hire. Independent action and ability to work with moderate supervision. Physical demands and working conditions described below. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements May be exposed to infectious diseases and hazardous environments; protective equipment required. Strong physical capability to lift and move equipment and patients; ability to handle emergencies; shift typically includes night hours. Protective gear includes eye protection, gowns, gloves, masks, lab coat, and lead aprons as applicable.
