Certified Medical Assistant

About the Role A nonexempt position responsible for performing a variety of duties in a medical facility, ranging from small clinics to large practices. The role may involve clinical and administrative duties, assisting physicians with patient care, and handling clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. Responsibilities Patient Care Check schedules and organize patient flow. Accompany patients to exam or procedure rooms. Assist patients with walking transfers, dressing, and specimen collection. Collect patient history and perform screenings per provider guidelines. Assist physicians and nurses with procedures and charting. Relate instructions to patients and families. Answer calls and provide pertinent information. Clerical Send/receive patient medical records; obtain lab/X‑ray reports and referral information. Complete forms and requisitions as needed. Schedule appointments and verify insurance coverage and patient demographics. Manage and update charts to ensure completeness. Environmental Set up instruments and equipment per department protocols. Clean exam/procedure rooms and instruments between visits to maintain infection control. Maintain sterilizer records and schedule maintenance. Order, sort, store supplies and restock rooms. Organizational Respect and promote patient rights. Respond appropriately to emergency codes. Share patient or staff issues with the supervisor. Clinical Medical Assisting Perform medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping, and autoclaving. Check vital signs and perform mensuration. Prepare for physical examinations. Assist with clinical pharmacology, drug administration (injections), and prescription verification. Assist with minor surgery, including tray set‑up, dressing, and suture removal. Handle biohazard waste and monitor compliance. Conduct therapeutic modalities and instruct patients in body mechanics and home care. Perform laboratory procedures (OSHA guidelines), CLIA‑waived testing, capillary punctures, and venipunctures. Handle specimens (urine, throat, vaginal, stool, sputum) and perform ECG mounting and emergency triage. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications High‑school diploma or GED and a medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution or a community college course. Certification indicating passing grade in a specific specialty (e.g., pediatric medical assistant exam) if working in a specialty department. Minimum one year of recent experience as a medical assistant in a medical facility or documented externship. Experience with ECG/EKG, vital signs, venipuncture, capillary, and injections. Reasoning and problem‑solving ability in limited‑standardization situations. Strong written, oral, and diagrammatic instruction interpretation skills. Computer skills: thorough knowledge of computer information systems and office equipment. Physical Demands Frequently standing, walking, sitting, using hands, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Frequent lifting or moving of up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting or moving of up to 25 pounds. Work Environment Professional office environment with standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Travel Primarily local during business hours; occasional out‑of‑area and overnight travel may be required. Salary Range $20.00 – $29.00 per hour (base pay; may vary by experience, education, and location).
