Atlan Construction is a civil site work and underground utilities contractor serving the greater Atlanta metro area. We build the infrastructure beneath the region's growth — storm and sanitary systems, water main, grading, and underground detention. We're looking for a Lead Pipe Layer who sets the pace in the trench and takes pride in pipe that goes in right the first time.

Job Summary
The Lead Pipe Layer is the leadman in the ditch — the experienced hand who directs the laying crew, shoots grade, sets the laser, and ensures every joint, slope, and elevation meets plan. Reporting to the Pipe Foreman, this role blends hands-on pipe installation with day-to-day leadership of the laborers working alongside you. You'll install water, sewer, storm, and force main systems on projects across metro Atlanta and keep the work moving safely and to spec.

Key Responsibilities

In-Ditch Leadership

• Lead and direct the pipe-laying crew in the trench, setting the pace and standard for the day's work
• Coordinate directly with the Pipe Foreman on layout, grade, and daily objectives
• Train and mentor laborers on proper laying, joining, and bedding techniques
• Reinforce Atlan Construction safety policies at the point of work

Pipe Installation & Grade

• Lay, join, align, and seal pipe for storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, force main, and related structures
• Shoot grades and set up pipe lasers to verify alignment, slope, and elevation
• Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and technical drawings
• Ensure proper bedding, backfill, and connection to structures per specification

Site & Support Work

• Perform utility locating to identify existing lines before excavation and prevent strikes
• Handle mud, concrete, and forming work for utility structures as needed
• Operate hand and power tools, and assist with equipment as directed
• Support trenching, bedding, and backfilling operations

Safety & Coordination

• Maintain jobsite safety per OSHA standards and company policy
• Communicate clearly with the foreman, grade checkers, and inspectors
• Report safety concerns and field issues promptly
• Keep the crew organized, on time, and productive

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of underground utility experience installing water, sewer, storm drainage, and force main
• Ability to shoot grades and set up a pipe laser
• Experience with mud and concrete work
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction plans
• Strong knowledge of storm, sanitary, and water systems
• Valid Georgia driver's license and Social Security card
• Ability to provide three current references and verifiable work history
• Strong work ethic, reliability, and leadership presence in the field

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical labor as needed
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work in trenches for extended periods

Preferred Certifications

• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
• Trenching and Excavation Competent Person a plus

Pay: $26.00 – $30.00 per hour, based on experience
