Recreation Specialist

Petaluma, California, United States. Summary The City of Petaluma is currently recruiting for a Part‑Time Recreation Specialist to fill one vacancy within the Parks and Recreation Department. Hours will primarily support the Spring and Fall softball seasons (May through November) and will not typically exceed 20 hours per week. This part‑time position does not offer benefits. Class Characteristics The selected candidate will be primarily assigned to field preparation. Responsibilities include setting up and maintaining athletic and recreation spaces for organized activities, leagues and events. Duties include lining fields, grooming infields, placing and removing equipment, safety inspections, basic maintenance (raking, debris removal), opening and closing fields, safe use of hand tools and light equipment, responding to basic public inquiries with good customer service, and reporting safety issues or damage to a supervisor. Duties Help plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise a variety of recreation programs, activities, and special events. Set‑up furniture and equipment for classes, special events, and programs. Schedule and organize activities and special programs. Design flyers, posters, information packets, activity guides, and other related documents. Perform general maintenance and basic custodial work. Help coordinate social functions and excursions. Perform a variety of office activities related to program functions. Maintain accurate records and reports. Correctly answer inquiries from the public over the telephone and in person. Review and share updated information about programs. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of: Recreation programs and activities offered by the City. Recreation Department policies, procedures, and philosophy. Basic CPR and First Aid. Recreation programs for all ages, depending on the program assigned. Safe work practices. Principles of supervision and training, modern office procedures. English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation. Basic principles of marketing and public relations. Standard office practices and procedures. Child and elder abuse reporting guidelines. Education and Experience Any combination equivalent to the education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to gain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education Completion of some college‑level coursework in recreation, public administration, physical education, special education, or a related field. Experience Two years of responsible work experience in recreational and events program activities. Physical Demands and Working Environment Position requires prolonged sitting, standing; walking; reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The role also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, dependent upon the specific assignment.
