Consistently exhibits professional conduct that is a behavior-based expression of the hospital’s Standards of Excellence. Assesses, plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates individualized, professional patient care from neonatal through geriatric patients on the assigned unit(s). Provides nursing care as directed by medical staff and in accordance with the objectives, policies and procedures of the hospital and the Washington State Nurse Practice Act. Demonstrates knowledge and skills required to respond rapidly to changing patient needs utilizing the principles of growth and development to assess each patient’s age specific needs and provide age specific treatment and care. Primary function is to float to designated departments to provide patient care based on patient census / volume and to provide rest and meal break relief to Registered Nurses and RN Shift Coordinators. REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, and current Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license. Requires current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification by start date. Requires Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and NIHSS Stroke Certification within 90 days of hire date, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire. Minimum of 3 years of experience in either emergency or critical care nursing and acute care nursing experience. SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Capable organizational ability and leadership skills. Demonstrated clinical nursing skills across the life span. Knowledge and ability to apply current theories, techniques and practices of nursing within their specialty area. Competent cardiac monitoring skills, including use of equipment. Critical thinking skills in the planning and administration of patient care delivery and use of department resources. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS Hazards include risk of exposure to communicable disease and risk of injury from lifting patients and operation of equipment. WORK CONTACT GROUP All patient related hospital departments, patients, families, visitors, nursing personnel and medical staff. SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, lift and transport patients. Must be able to bend, stoop, push and pull. Walks and stands for most of the working day. SUPERVISED BY Clinical Nurse Manager Departments: ACU, PACU, CCU, ED, MSTU, Recovery Center ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TECHNICAL Provides direct patient care and functions as a patient advocate. Assesses the comprehensive nursing needs of an assigned group of patients. Coordinates the patient and family / significant other education process. Continuously plans, implements, and evaluates patient care, incorporating patient and family / significant other into the process. Utilizes a collaborative approach across department(s), service unit, and organizational boundaries. Participates with physician / provider partners and other interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement patient plan of care. Promotes teamwork and cooperation through participation in patient care activities, patient assignments, and staff assistance. Provides support to ensure patient care activities are completed. Oral and written communication is clear, constructive, consistent, effective, and conducive to positive interactions between individuals and groups. Demonstrates good listening skills and seeks feedback. Assures mutual understanding. Communicates effectively all relevant information (e.g., patient information, safety issues, problems with equipment, quality issues, etc.) to immediate supervisor, in a timely way. Identifies adverse changes in patient status, provides staff support and assistance as needed mentoring for positive patient outcomes. Reports adverse outcomes per standards and in a timely and thorough manner. Troubleshoots processes with a focus towards preventing problems before they occur. Maintains skills competency annually as evidenced by testing and/or return demonstration during skills lab or department level trainings. Nursing Scope of Practice: Assessment: Collects and documents comprehensive data pertinent to the patient’s health or the situation. Diagnosis: Analyzes the assessment data to determine the nursing diagnoses or patient problem/issues. Outcomes Identification: Identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or the situation. Planning: Develops a plan that prescribes nursing strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes. Implementation: Implements the identified plan. Evaluation: Evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes. Quality of Practice: Systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice. Leadership: Provides leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
