Park Ranger & Records Program Lead - Law Enforcement

Summary This position is located in the Division of Law Enforcement, Security, and Emergency Services (LESES), within the National Park Service's (NPS) Washington Office of Visitor and Resource Protection (VRP). This position serves as a national law enforcement specialist providing expert guidance, support, and directionin the formulation and execution of national policy, guidelines, standards related to law enforcement, security, and law enforcement programs. Major Duties Major Duties of the Park Ranger (Protection) - Records Program Manager position include, but are not limited to the following: Supports parks nationwide by managing law enforcement systems and equipment, coordinating interagency efforts, and advising on complex and sensitive law enforcement matters. Provide training to law enforcement rangers in the field either in person or through virtual/electronic platforms. Develops new strategies, techniques, and procedures to address emerging issues in uniformed law enforcement across the Service. Conduct program reviews and assists parks in achieving compliance with NPS and DOI law enforcement policies, procedures, and standards. Manage records, reporting, and communications related to law enforcement and emergency services; compiles and analyzes data to identify trends and provide recommendations. Education Law Enforcement Commission: This position requires applicants to possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to possess by 07/17/2026 a valid Type I National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission (or equivalent), which requires completing training from an accredited institution, which currently consists of over 650 class hours and lasts on average 17 weeks. Please visit the Association of National Park Rangers' Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program (SLETP) for additional information on approved training courses and equivalency for commissioning. There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level of this announcement. Requirements U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Subject to pre-employment physical and drug testing. Must possess a Type I or higher Law Enforcement Commission. New employees of the Department of the Interior must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of net pay within 30 days of entrance on duty. Selectee(s) will be required to carry a firearm while performing duties and maintain firearm proficiency. Selectee(s) must be free of any domestic violence convictions. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Merit Promotion Eligibility Documentation such as: Current and former National Park Service employees must submit a copy of their latest SF-50 "Notification of Personnel Action" reflecting career or career-conditional status in the competitive service (Tenure 1 or 2), position title, series, grade and an additional SF-50 showing highest permanent grade ever held, if not reflected on your latest SF-50. Examples of acceptable SF-50s include: Promotion, Within Rate Increases (WRI/WGI), or Appointment SF-50s. Do not submit an Award SF-50 as it does not provide the needed information. Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, which includes ALL Appointment AND Termination SF-50s for EACH appointment as well as ALL performance evaluations, for each qualifying period of temporary employment claimed. Other Supporting Documents, if applicable, such as: Performance Appraisals and Awards: All applicants must submit their most recent performance appraisal showing the official rating of record and signed by a supervisor. If submitting a performance appraisal not dated within the last18 months, a statement as to why it is the most recent must be submitted. If no performance appraisal is available, applicants must submit a statement as to why it is not available (including if any prior performance appraisals/evaluations were at an acceptable level). Failure to submit any of the above mentioned required documents will result in loss of consideration due to an incomplete application package. Documentation for Career Transition Assistance Plan consideration if you are a displaced Federal employee within the local commuting area. Physical Demands: Work is primarily sedentary in an office setting but requires regular physical activity during patrols, field investigations, and special operations. Law enforcement duties may involve strenuous activities such as pursuing suspects on foot, carrying equipment, operating vehicles and watercraft, and handling firearms. The incumbent must maintain physical and medical qualifications necessary for a Type I Law Enforcement Commission. Working Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment with normal safety precautions. Fieldwork may involve exposure to outdoor elements, rugged terrain, and risks associated with law enforcement duties, including potential confrontations with dangerous or armed individuals. The incumbent must be prepared to use protective equipment, defensive tactics, and firearms when required. This position is suitable for telework and may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval. This is a secondary-administrative law enforcement position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U. S. C. 8412 (d) (FERS). PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may meet qualification requirements, but may not be eligible for special retirement coverage. If such an applicant is selected, they will be placed in the regular retirement system. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under CSRS, an employee must transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under FERS, an employee must: 1) transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position, AND 2) complete 3 years of service in a primary rigorous position including any such service during which no FERS deductions were withheld, AND 3) must be continuously employed in a secondary position(s) since moving from a primary rigorous position, except for any break in employment from a secondary position that began with involuntary separation (not for cause).
