Park Ranger (Protection) - Records Program Manager

Summary This position is located in the Division of Law Enforcement, Security, and Emergency Services (LESES), within the National Park Service’s Washington Office of Visitor and Resource Protection (VRP). It serves as a national law‑enforcement specialist providing expert guidance and support in the formulation and execution of national policy, guidelines, and standards related to law enforcement, security, and law‑enforcement programs. Major Duties Supports parks nationwide by managing law‑enforcement systems and equipment, coordinating interagency efforts, and advising on complex and sensitive law‑enforcement matters. Provides training to law‑enforcement rangers in the field either in person or through virtual or electronic platforms. Develops new strategies, techniques, and procedures to address emerging issues in uniformed law‑enforcement across the Service. Conducts program reviews and assists parks in achieving compliance with NPS and DOI law‑enforcement policies, procedures, and standards. Manages records, reporting, and communications related to law‑enforcement and emergency services; compiles and analyzes data to identify trends and provide recommendations. Education and Experience Applicants must hold a valid Type I National Park Service Law Enforcement Commission or an equivalent; the training comprises over 650 class hours and lasts approximately 17 weeks. Substitution of education for experience is not allowed at this grade level. Requirements and Qualifications U.S. citizenship required. Appointment subject to a background investigation, favorable adjudication, and mandatory firearm proficiency. Possession of a Type I or higher Law Enforcement Commission (or obtaining one by the job deadline). Free of any domestic‑violence convictions. Ability to undergo a pre‑employment physical and drug test, followed by random drug testing during employment. Valid driver’s license and required operation record certificates. Minimum age of 21 years; males must meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements. Required to carry a firearm while performing duties. Eligible to travel overnight and use a government charge card for travel.
