Assistant Professor of Practice in Acting (Professional Track) The Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Practice in Acting, specializing in voice and speech. The successful candidate will teach voice and speech for the actor at multiple levels, teach accents and dialects, and coach voice, speech, and dialect work for department productions. Expertise in one or more of the following is also welcome: scene study, Shakespeare and heightened language, movement for the actor, acting for the camera. The successful candidate will have the requisite experience and knowledge necessary to support students' entrance into the professional world. We seek a colleague who balances professional rigor with human-centered, consent-based practices that prioritize the vocal health of the developing actor, consistent with the student-centered mission of a public university. The successful candidate will join the faculty of the Acting Area, which offers BA in Theatre and Dance and BFA in Acting degrees. The Acting Area's priority is to cultivate well-rounded artist citizens with a broad range of skills who can compete in and contribute to the shifting landscape of the performing arts and entertainment fields with agency and innovation. Faculty encourage students to develop concrete acting skills rooted in theatre while applying those skills across a variety of contexts and disciplines. The Acting Area supports and is supported by programs in Dance; Directing and Playwriting; Drama and Theatre for Youth and Communities/Theatre Education; Live Design and Production; and Performance as Public Practice. As an integral part of the thriving creative culture of Austin, Texas, the Department of Theatre and Dance offers an array of programs to prepare artists, scholars, and teachers to make profound contributions to theatre and dance through engaging study, interdisciplinary collaboration, and exceptional performance experiences. The department has 35 full-time faculty members and 18 full-time staff members and is housed in well-equipped facilities, which include black box, proscenium, and lab theatres; teaching and practice spaces; and state-of-the-art design and computing labs. The department produces six large scale and numerous small productions per year, including the largest student-driven biennial New Works Festival in the country. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Terminal degree in acting or a related field. Demonstrated ability to teach multiple levels of voice for the actor and accents/dialects courses. Demonstrated ability to coach voice and speech for the stage and/or camera. Significant training in one or more of the following, or comparable, vocal methods: Linklater, Rodenburg, Berry, Knight-Thompson. Preferred Qualifications: History of working in the field of acting, as an actor, director, text coach, and/or voice and speech coach. Demonstrated ability to proactively engage students in emerging professional development and employment strategies related to acting. Demonstrated interest and/or experience in human-centered, consent-based practices in acting training. Administrative experience sufficient to maximize opportunities for engagement with our learning communities and to competently fulfill service requirements to the Acting Area, Theatre and Dance Department, and University. An expansive history of work in the fields of live performance sufficient to engage productively with colleagues in content areas of the department other than acting.
