Private Sales Specialist (Trade)

Position overview

Level & Co. is a secondary market gallery specializing in Post-War and Contemporary art, from Abstract Expressionism to Neo-Expressionism to 21st-century masters. We advise leading collectors, sell works on behalf of the two largest art funds, and broker secondary market works between collectors. We are wholly-owned by Masterworks, and exclusively represent its $2 billion art collection for sales, which includes over 550 paintings and one of the top collections of works by Basquiat, Kusama, Haring and other artists.

We are looking for a resourceful, well-connected New York-based Private Sales Specialist to build and run a network of trade relationships. You will be the person advisors, galleries and auction house specialists call when their clients are looking for a specific work, and the person we rely on to find works before they reach the open market.

You will be responsible for

• Building and managing about 50 trade relationships. Advisors, galleries, and auction house specialists who have direct relationships with collectors. You will keep a steady, documented cadence of contact with each one.
• Sourcing buyer requests. Turning those relationships into specific requests: the artist, series, period, size, and price range their clients are looking for, along with who the end buyer is and how serious they are.
• Sourcing artworks. Finding available works through your contacts, working from the team's target sourcing list of priority artists and works, both for private sale and for acquisition by the Masterworks platform.
• Matching requests to works. Pairing buyer requests with works we control or have sourced, and working with the team to negotiate between buyer and seller through to close.
• Qualifying counterparties. Vetting intermediaries and assembling basic due diligence on buyers before works are shared.
• Keeping the record. Logging every engagement, request, and sourced work in our CRM so the team can see and act on the full pipeline.
• Market intelligence. Tracking pricing, recent sales and upcoming catalysts in the artist markets you cover.
• Being in the room. Attending fairs, exhibitions, previews, and trade dinners to deepen relationships and meet new contacts.

How you'll be measured

You'll be measured on two results:

• Brokerage revenue: at least 3x your total compensation, growing to 5x over time.
• Acquisitions: paintings you source that are acquired for the Masterworks platform.

We also track the activity that drives both: engagements with your contacts, buyer requests received, works sourced, works sent, offers received, and deals closed.

In your first few months, you will

• Get fully up to speed on Level & Co.'s sales process and the Masterworks collection
• Build your list of about 50 trade contacts and set a regular engagement cadence with each
• Bring in your first buyer requests and sourced works, logged and qualified
• Join weekly pipeline meetings with the Private Sales team to match requests to works and plan next steps on key contacts

Requirements

• 3 to 6 years in sales, private sales, or a specialist role at a gallery, auction house or art advisory firm
• An existing network of advisors, dealers, and auction house contacts in Post-War and Contemporary art
• Working knowledge of artist markets at $500K+ price points
• Comfortable with a revenue target and a high volume of outreach
• Highly organized and disciplined about keeping records current
• Excellent verbal and written communication; fluency in another language is a plus
• Able to travel locally and internationally

• Must be able to work from our New York office; this is not a remote role
