Utilities Technician II

About This Role We are seeking a new team member to support the Utility Operations Dept. in a GMP and Non‑GMP environment. The successful candidate will operate the plant utility systems, including initiating and shutting down systems via the BMS and DeltaV control system. They will monitor utilities, respond to alarms, perform daily rounds, and log readings. The role involves training in unit operations, leading procedure execution, and working with minimal supervision. What You’ll Do Operate plant utilities under guidance of a qualified operator, including medium pressure boilers, chillers, glycol system, cooling towers, air compressors, waste neutralization, compressed air, and fire suppression systems. Operate GMP systems under guidance of a qualified operator: USP water system, water softeners, RO systems, Biowaste inactivation, vapor compression stills, clean steam generators, oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and CO₂ gas delivery systems. Monitor utility systems through the BMS and Delta V control systems. Maintain utilities and respond to alarms. Log readings on plant equipment systems and investigate alarms. Provide troubleshooting for utility equipment. Perform preventive maintenance on utility equipment. Perform daily rounds on all equipment and systems across your area. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent with 4+ years prior industry experience, OR 2 years trade school/certification plus 1 year industry experience, OR commensurate military experience. Basic mechanical skills and knowledge of steam systems, air systems, chillers, water systems. Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite). Adaptable to changing needs and demands; comfortable navigating a changing environment. Ability to interact with others professionally and courteously in accordance with Biogen’s Core Behaviors. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to all levels of the organization. Preferred Skills Great organization and time‑management skills; efficient and productive. Proficient with lock‑out/tag‑out safety procedures and energized system work practices. Practical knowledge of GMPs. Prior experience as a utility operator in a complex pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical manufacturing environment. Physical Demands and Schedule Shift: Day shift (0430 to 1630) or night shift (1630 to 0430) on a 2,2,3 rotation. Requirements include occasionally ascending/descending a ladder, entering mechanical spaces that may be difficult to traverse, moving/lifting up to 50lb, and standing for up to 3hours at a time. Frequent movement around campus is required to access different equipment and perform various tasks. Job Level Entry Level Compensation & Benefits Base salary range: $25.96 – $34.13 per hour, determined analytically.
