Above + Beyond Cancer is a nonprofit organization based in Greater Des Moines, Iowa, founded in 2011, by Oncologist Richard L. Deming, MD. The mission of this dynamic organization is to elevate the mind, body, and spirit of patients, survivors, and caregivers throughout the cancer journey.

Job Summary:

The Marketing & Event Manager serves as a key member of the Above + Beyond Cancer Team. This position is critical in coordinating, planning, and implementing all events for Above + Beyond Cancer as well as the Transformational Journey. They design all printed materials including the annual report and brochures plus all materials for our events. They also plan, create and promote all marketing efforts including social media, bi-weekly newsletters and update the website. They assist with all fundraising efforts on social media, emails and direct mail.

The Marketing & Event Manager will play a critical role in driving this vibrant organization to even greater heights. Reporting to the President, and the 24-person Board of Directors, this unique professional experience provides a rewarding opportunity. The work done by Above + Beyond Cancer is very team oriented as the staff works closely with cancer survivors, caregivers, volunteers and partners to deliver our programs to the cancer community. They will also help carry out the 3-year strategic plan which was voted on by the Board of Directors in January 2025.

Responsibilities for the Marketing & Event Manager include, but are not limited to:

Event Coordination –The Marketing & Event Manager will help to coordinate and manage:

• Beyond the Summitt Survivorship Conference – annual June conference for cancer survivors and caregivers
• Jump Event– a fundraising event with tandem skydiving
• Celebrate! Event – the key fundraising dinner held each fall
• Fur Ride – winter fundraising bike ride in February
• Smaller events include but not limited to: World Cancer Day Walk and Cancer Survivor Day Bike Ride

Coordinate and create Virtual Programming – Produce and edit compelling video content to showcase our mission, programs, community impact, and stories across social media and other marketing channels including events.

Above + Beyond Cancer Website – Update and maintain the Above + Beyond Cancer website including the calendar for the Optimal Living Program.

Marketing, Fundraising, Advocacy, and Social Media – Lead the planning and implementation of consistent, creative marketing, cancer advocacy, fundraising, and social media efforts to support the continued growth and success of Above + Beyond Cancer. Develop strategies to promote programs to medical partners, encourage new participants to join, and keep current participants informed through the bi-monthly newsletter. Support direct mail initiatives and the annual fundraising plan through social media and email campaigns and represent Above + Beyond Cancer at community events.

Marketing + Communication Committee – Work with the chair to create the agenda. Coordinate and lead the quarterly committee meetings. Provide minutes of each meeting for the quarterly executive meetings and board meetings.

Optimal Living Program Support – Helping the Program Director, in planning, promotion and delivering our programs throughout the Metro Des Moines area.

Support the Annual Transformational Journey – Support the planning of the annual Transformational Journey by working with the team to help with travel arrangements and coordinating the overall details of these domestic and international journeys.

Support the Hotel Program – Serve as a “back-up” or support role for the Hotel Program, making reservations and coordinating with patients and medical staff when the Hotel Program director is on vacation, or leave, or away from the office for an extended period of time.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• A positive attitude and embrace our mind, body, and spirit approach to cancer survivorship
• Ability to manage multiple events, deadlines, vendors, and internal stakeholders at the same time while keeping projects organized, on budget and on schedule.
• Skill in developing event marketing plans that align with our goals, target audiences, brand messaging, and objectives.
• Ability to create, film, and edit engaging video content for social media and other marketing channels.
• Ability to maintain attention to detail for all communications.
• Familiarity with email marketing, social media promotion, event websites, registration platforms, CRM systems, and basic performance analytics.
• Attend events, site visits, early set-ups, evening programs, weekends, or off-site activities as needed.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Creative and proficient in graphic design with Canva and Adobe programs.

• Proficient with Google, Microsoft Office Suite and Meta Business Suite.
• Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• None

Education and Experience:

• A Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
• At least three years of experience in professional event organizing, marketing, and communications.

  Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk, working on a computer, standing, walking and physical activity required.
• Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
• Works in a mixture of office environments, and in the settings where program, activities, and events take place.
• May require hours worked in early morning, evening, or on weekends as organization needs to dictate.
• This is not a remote position, however there is flexibility as to the Marketing & Event Manager working from both their home office and the organization’s office in West Des Moines.
