Health and Safety Representative – Linden, NJ The Health and Safety Representative is responsible for providing complete, thorough, and professional health, safety and environmental advice within the corporation, including effective recommendations based on legislation, education, training and industry best practices. The role promotes a positive safety culture while continuously anticipating, assessing and controlling safety and health hazards to ensure risks are effectively eliminated or controlled. The representative works as a team member to assist and guide company management and employees with compliance demands of the corporate health and safety program, the client’s safety program, and governing workplace or Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. Responsibilities include driving corrective actions, initiating health and safety system enhancements, facilitating training, writing policy and procedures, providing essential information during emergencies and maintaining safety program administrative records suitable for audit purposes for the projects or sites for which they are assigned. Provide leadership and advice for maintaining OSHA compliance, supporting managers and employees to identify and address health and safety hazards to meet program needs. Assist and coach site management to perform safety functions including investigations, safety meetings, safe work procedure development/revision, job hazard assessment processes and worker safety education. Promote a positive safety‑mindfulness culture within the work environment for the assigned region(s) or organizational entities. Assist and guide company management with effective implementation and administration of corporate safety compliance program directives and provisions, advising on safety decisions in support of company, client and subcontractor personnel. Assist operational organizations with project planning, reviewing and assisting with job hazard assessments, preparing safe work plans, and developing safety assessment checklists. Monitor, coordinate and consult with company, subcontractor and client personnel to ensure health and safety compliance with the client site, project policies, procedures and guidelines. Interact with assigned company entity, customers, subcontractors and regulatory agency personnel to research and interpret standards, codes, and regulations. Audit training records of company personnel for assigned entities to ensure minimum training requirements are met. Facilitate in‑house training programs in new hire orientation, WHMIS, TDG, CSTS, respirator fit testing, and other safety training, and coordinate or administer these programs. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of safety devices, processes, and procedures. Perform periodic audits and document base inspections and routine field inspections, including random equipment operator competency checks and audits of company and subcontractor activities. Establish a safety network with client safety departments and local government and regulatory officials, maintaining information on file and promoting open communication. Serve on applicable site health & safety committees, attending client meetings and communicating meeting information to company management. Expeditiously notify health and safety management of any severe accident, property damage or incident, providing details of the event. Investigate near‑misses, incidents and safety concerns with management, ensuring all necessary communications and documentation are complete and recommending corrective action. Assist in the development and implementation of administrative record‑keeping systems and standards to capture and analyze health and safety performance, including report writing and data entry. Provide periodic safety performance reports to health and safety management. Provide additional support services to the corporate health and safety department, including supervisory coverage, auditing support for other entities, business projects and scheduled shutdowns across North America, and assistance with safety audits in other regional offices. Maintain the ability to operate assigned company transportation in compliance with insurance provider and regulatory authorities. Respond in a timely manner to transportation workers, clients or other personnel as required for business purposes. Qualifications Willing to work in the field 90% of the time. High School diploma plus specialized training or 1 year college. Able to pursue certification in at least one of the following: Safety Professional (CRSP/CSP), Industrial Hygienist (CIH). 5 to 7 years of experience in a health and safety environment. Must have Confined Space Training/Experience. Must have a valid driver’s license. TWIC card preferred. Strong interpersonal, oral, written communication and presentation skills. Understanding of employee/employer privacy obligations. Excellent listening skills, customer focus, ability to manage multiple tasks and strong time management. Attention to detail, investigative process skills and basic safety training skills. Knowledge of occupational safety and health standards, federal and state/provincial regulations and jurisdictional OH&S legislation. Basic math and mechanical ability, with knowledge of associated safety equipment. Broad managerial skill set and ability to provide effective recommendations based on best practices. Capability to make safety‑conscious decisions independently or in groups. Ability to work day or night shifts. Clean Harbors is an equal opportunity employer.
