Pharmacy Tech Trainee

Summary The Pharmacy Technician Trainee position is designed for individuals enrolled in the MyMichigan Health Employer-Based Pharmacy Technician Training Program in partnership with Pharmacy Technician University (PTU). Trainees gain comprehensive didactic and hands‑on training in an inpatient hospital pharmacy while completing state‑approved requirements for pharmacy technician licensure. This temporary training role provides the foundational knowledge, technical skills, and professional behaviors required to safely support the medication‑use process under the supervision of licensed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Upon successful completion of the program and licensure, trainees may be eligible for placement into a Pharmacy Technician role within MyMichigan Health. Responsibilities (50 %) Participates in hands‑on training in medication preparation, dispensing, and delivery within the hospital inpatient pharmacy. (50 %) Completes PTU didactic modules (100+ hours) and required quizzes, assignments, and final exam. Assists with sterile and non‑sterile compounding in compliance with USP  and  standards. Learn and apply principles of medication safety, patient confidentiality (HIPAA), and ethical pharmacy practice. Supports the use of automated dispensing cabinets, barcoding, and electronic health record systems. Assists with receiving, stocking, and rotating medications in accordance with storage, labeling, and inventory control standards. Practices accurate pharmaceutical calculations and proper use of pharmaceutical‑medical terminology, abbreviations, and symbols. Demonstrates effective teamwork, professional communication, and adherence to MyMichigan policies and procedures. Upholds infection control, aseptic technique, and safety practices in all assigned work areas. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Education and Licensure High school diploma or equivalent. Enrollment in the MyMichigan Health Employer‑Based Pharmacy Technician Training Program (PTU) is required. Must successfully complete all PTU modules, training, and obtain Michigan Pharmacy Technician Licensure within 1 year of hire (passing final exam with ≥ 75 %). Must apply for and obtain Michigan Pharmacy Technician Licensure within 14 days of program completion. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Attention to detail and strong commitment to accuracy. Ability to follow directions and established procedures. Basic math and computer literacy skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position. Ability to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device and perform the functions of the job as outlined. Overall vision and hearing are necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay awake. Overall dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling. May require repetition of these movements regularly or frequently. Physical demand level: Light. Must occasionally lift or carry 11–20 lb (0–33 % of the day), frequently lift 10 lb (34–66 % of the day), and perform walking/standing/pushing/pulling of arm/leg controls.
