Commercial Credit Analyst, CRE

Overview A member of the Commercial Credit team that partners with senior team members supporting the duties of underwriting and the ongoing monitoring of a portfolio of credit relationships. Responsible for performing supporting analysis, identifying risk issues, and completing sections of credit analysis, as needed, to assess the creditworthiness of commercial clients. Primary Responsibilities Facilitate the credit needs of customers by analyzing new requests and material modifications from deal screen through approval and for the life of the loan, including recommending addition or removal of conditions. Manage ongoing credit risk of existing loan portfolios through continuous credit monitoring (CCM) activities such as annual reviews, interim update memos, covenant monitoring, problem loan management, early warning indicators, and other credit surveillance. Review all pertinent credit and financial information, including financial statements, tax returns, due diligence reports, credit bureau data, appraisals, internal credit information, industry research, and peer data. Determine the need for more thorough investigation or additional information. Analyze financial information and complete credit analyses for the bank’s commercial transactions, providing an independent credit quality assessment with well‑supported risk rating, credit risks, mitigants, industry concerns, market and financial trends. Make structure recommendations based on evaluation of scenarios, including the company's case, the bank’s base case, and a downside case. Identify suspicious activity and activities contrary to the customer’s interests. Partner proactively with relationship managers throughout the credit process from deal screen through approval and for the life of the loan. Spread financial statements and prepare financial/projection models to sensitize various conditions impacting the transaction. Prepare cash flow, collateral schedules, covenant sensitivity calculations, and guarantor statement analysis as appropriate. Enter complete and accurate data into bank systems to support underwriting and portfolio management activities. Attend client/prospect calls with relationship managers to gain a thorough understanding of the client’s business. Recommend risk rating based on underwriting parameters and present analysis or address questions during credit request discussions or committee presentations. Assist in monitoring credit policy compliance by verifying adherence to the Commercial Credit Policy and commenting on any risk associated with non‑compliance. Understand and adhere to applicable compliance/operational risk controls in accordance with company or regulatory standards and policies. Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand. Maintain internal control standards, including implementation of audit points and external regulator issues. Complete other duties as assigned. Scope of Responsibilities Commercial Credit is responsible for the credit delivery of the bank's commercial clients throughout the credit lifecycle, from initial analyses of new relationships to material modifications or restructurings of long‑term relationships, and ongoing monitoring through the life of the loan. The role ensures accurate completion of risk rating scorecards and financial statement spreads, supporting credit decisions for new, renewed, or amended credit transactions. Education and Experience Required Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field and a minimum of one year’s work experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement preparation/analysis, or related financial analysis. In lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 5 years’ higher education and/or work experience, including one year in commercial credit or related analysis is required. Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong analytical ability; critical thinking and problem‑solving abilities; attention to detail with a high level of accuracy; strong organizational and time‑management skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; customer‑focused with strong interpersonal skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office. Education and Experience Preferred Experience with Capital IQ, FactSet, Bloomberg; experience with nCino; experience underwriting commercial real estate deals. Compensation Pay range: $72,200.00–$120,300.00 annual (USD). Location Falls Church, Virginia, United States of America.
